180 grain .357 loads

Post by Guncase »

I just sent a money order to Veral Smith for an LBT 180 grain .359 FNGC mold that I plan to use in my Blackhawk and marlin .35 Remington. Any load recommendations? By the way, LBT is having a mold sale. Just e-mail Veral for the list. The molds he has in stock are 25% off. Here's the 3 screw .357 I will be casting for. I'm not sure if Mama will like to shoot it when I load it full power.

I've been using a Laser-Cast 180 flat point (looks like a truncated cone) over 6 grains of Unique. Winchester cases and primers. Shoot them at longish ranges (to 250 yards) with a Marlin Cowboy II with 24" barrel and Ruger pistols. They trundle along and when they get there they knock things down on a regular basis. Not setting any speed records but accurate and comfortable to shoot. Best regards... Wind - Watch yer topknot (and hers) -

I shoot 180 cast bullets with 12gr SR4759 useing standard primers out of my new model blackhawk and 1894c. I got that load out of the RCBS cast bullet reloading manual. I get 1346fps out of an 18.5" barrel. BTW, max load is 13gr.

Just curious, those grips look longer than standard lenght Blackhawk grips. What are they if so or are my eyes fooling me again!

Thanks for the loads. I have some sr4759, and I'll pick up some lil gun. The grips are my first attempt at making some from scratch. They are a little fuller at the bottom but They fit me well. I picked up this 3 screw a couple of years ago for $269! It was dirty and had some hideous mother of pearl grips on it. Also has some dings in the bottom of the barrel and an overtravel screw hole in the aluminum trigger guard. It has an excellent trigger that breaks at 3 lbs. and shoots like a dream. Here's a pic before I finished the grips.

Guncase,

My wife does not like light wimpy loads. She wants a nuclear mushroom ball of fire from the muzzle when she shoots the .357 mag. If your wife is anything like mine, she'll probably out shoot you with those 180gr bullets.

BTW, what did you do with the MOP grips? My wife thinks they are pretty.

Joe,
you are welcome to the grips. I'll gladly send them to you, but they are missing the escutcheons. I used them for the grips I made. I have your address from October '06, I'll send them there unless it has changed.

13.5 Grains of H110 - that'll give you about 1700 fps from your carbine and around 1400 fps from the BH. Pretty stout ;)

Oops - you've got a 35 Remington - not a .357.... anyway...

When I coached Little League we had a kid on the team that batted the same way that shooter shoots, with eyes closed.

She's right handed but left eye dominant. I always thought I had the perfect wife until I noticed that

Minor comment. I noticed she did not have safety glasses on. I assume this was for a photo shoot, but if it were "for real" some safety glasses would sure help if you get some side blast or anything else. Just a safety thought for the day.

I got best accuracy with 9.5 gr SR4759 through my Win 94 Legacy in .357. The bullets are the from the same mold as Lasercast 180's, but are Mastercast Bullets. Different alloy and better casting. For 35 Rem I will go with the Lasercast version, and push them a little faster. Ok, a lot faster.

These will be my short range and long range silhouette loads, respectively.

Guncase,

My address is the same. The escutcheons can be had from Brownells if my wife really likes them.

Thanks a bunch.
