OK, Savage experts,

Post by jnyork »

A friend has a Savage 340 .30-30, he wants to install a receiver sight . It is drilled and tapped for such, but the only one I can come up with is the Williams FP340. Did Lyman or Redfield ever make a sight for the 340, or is he stuck with the Williams. Thanks.

I'm sure they did way back when that rifle was new. Finding one now - by either manufacturer - will mean searching the web

According to my book, "Old Gunsights", Williams was the only maker for a receiver sight on the 340. Like you said, its the FP340. -----------Sixgun

That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.

I wouldn't call it STUCK! The FP is a darn good sight. Those 340s (and kin) are surprisingly good rifles. They must have been popular as one regularly sees them.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Guys.. back when I was a pup, and a Winchester 94 cost about $72.00, you could buy a Savage 340 for about $46.00.. now the Williams Foolproof will cost you that much!! The Five D Williams sight was sold for $5.00, and the Foolproof was $10.00.. about 1962 if'n I remember right... Les

I sure like my 340, Nikon scope is clear, solid mount for sure, lapped the barrel, glassed the action and it shoots better than I can.

I'm sure the Williams sight would work just fine for a hunting or plinking sight, but this guy wants to shoot silhouettes in our little club matches with it. I have had personal experience with two Willliams sights and they were essentially worthless for any kind of target shooting, there is too much backlash in the adjustment screws making precise adjustments very difficult, if you go up with them and try to come back down you have to turn the knob several clicks before anything happens. YMMV

It's called backlash, it can be corrected.
But it would take someone like myself who understands thread terminology, near zero clearence can be achieved; but it is time intensive.
