Whilst walking on boxing day Tia and me had this stoat run across the forestry road just in front of us.
As I was slipping the carbine off my shoulder I squeaked like a mouse. As I was shouldering the carbine the stoat came running out of the brash to provide a shot.
At the shot he ran back into cover and out of site. I took Tia to the zone and immediatly Tia was sniffing the area, I encouraged her telling her she is a good girl all the time and then asked her to fetch it.
Now Tia is a very clever dog and soon found the smelly little varmint and brought it straight back to me, a first for Tia and I was very impressed to put it mildly
The CCI solid raked him end for end going in at his right front leg and leaving in front his left rear leg, he made a 10yd run and quit. He had some ticks on him too!
Nath, you are the man!! If there are "Rednecks" in England you would qualify as one of the best. By the way I use that term as a great compliment and term of endearment.

I thought I was going to get a Stoat yesterday, I saw one from my window sneaking along the hedge about 55 yds away but by the time I got my Savage 24 loaded it had run across to the landlords arboretum.

So many questions
The scope is only a cheap offering from BSA, most probably made in China.
The sling OS I got from my nearest dealer, I don't know who made it. I like the canvass slings, allways have. The one on the 308 looks out of place mind
Just a few more weeks GK and you can blase away

Nath.
May I suggest the .308 deserves a 1" leather U.S. military sling (AKA the Model 1907 sling). Once you learn how to use it, yuo'll have no need of shooting sticks, bipod, etc.

You called it a "smelly varmint" - is it a cross between a squirrel and a goat?
Weasel family, ferret family, a small version of the wolverine and a species in it's own right. I guess the good Lord made em to keep other critters in check.
Very smelly, the dog curled her nose up at first!
Tia is just starting to tell the differance between me carrying a rifle or shotgun as in just walk quiet versus her flushing game etc.
I'll have to check out those slings, how easy are they to deploy in the field ?
Good shot. One thing about members of the mustelid family is that they all stink. I trapped fishers or locally called fisher cats and they smell. I took one and boiled the skull as well as his pecker to get the bone for a hat pin. That stunk up the whole house. I had to boil a lot of vinegar to fumigate the place.

Nath.
Some slings allow quicker movement than others, by their catches and the way that they loop back. There various ways to stick your elbow through the sling. The Army taught me one way that was good if you had plenty of time to set up and adjust the sling to fit snugly around the elbow; but it is useless if you are trying to get off a snap shot. Experimentation is the best way. I like just setting the whole sling so that it is long enough for me to quickly get my whole arm through it.
Then, there are those Spec Ops type slings that let you bring the rifle up in front of you. It takes some experimentation for what is right with you.
