Howdy
My 336 showed it's propensity to scratch brass from the get go. I tore it down and polished a lot of rough spots out before getting it scoped and zeroed this year. The scratching seemed to be reduced a bit until I tried levering it real slow and quiet a couple of times. Then the thing threw a real hissy fit. The carrier isn't keeping the cartridges aligned with the chamber properly. I actually had a hangup that caught the nose of the cartridge on the edge of the chamber once, and one that actually caught the edge of the cartridge case mouth, (a factory crimped load) on the edge of the chamber. In the meantime it tends to scrape the bejabbers out of the cartridge, bullet to rim.
What controls the position of the carrier and the "timing" of the carrier in the load sequence in a 336?AW

I don't know the answer to this but mine in 30-30 catches the federal flat points on the top edge of the chamber whether levering slow or fast. However the winchester and remington round noses as well as the leverevolution bullets feed nice and smooth with no issues- so that is what i use.

My .308MX did that at first. I found the extractor needed a little more bevel on the bottom and was not letting the case rim slip under it right. I had a spare one ment for a 336 .30-30 so I sliped it in and the rifle feeds slick as can be now. May be your problem to.
