I went to the show to buy a levergun........

Post by Stan in SC »

Forgive me for I have sinned.I went to the Greenville,South Carolina gun show yesterday with the intent of buying either a .357 or a .44 magnum lever gun.I really did have great intentions.
What distracted me and what I came home with was an absolutely beautiful almost pristine looking Ithaca Model 87 pump "Deerslayer" in 20 gauge. This has the 20" rifled barrel and rifle sights on it.The model 87 is the model 37 renamed from 1987 thru 1995 and then back again to model 37.There is not one scratch or dent or bad place on this piece. It looks like it was never in the woods.
My rationale was that I went looking for a short big caliber iron sighted "pig gun".I found it.I'm looking forward to getting this one to the range.
Now I have to go and say five "Hail Marys".

I was an LA county deputy sheriff for six years in the early seventies. we used those old ithaca deerslayers in our cars back then. I truly don't think there was ever a better shotgun made. The way those were used and abused was unbelievable, and they'd just keep coming back for more. I don't believe I ever saw one malfunction.

I've had an original 20ga M37 Deerslayer, with an extra 28" mod-choke barrel, which I've used in my state's "shotgun only" deer season for the last 20 years.

They're dependable, decent guns, and accurate, too - I even won a Turkey Shoot against rifles with it once upon a time.
The club that hosted the shoot wouldn't let me use it after that - the other shooters complained I was cheating, since I didn't use a rifle on the running turkey paper target.

Very nice. Its okay its not a lever, pictures are still required!!! Good luck with that. Those shotguns have always been a favorite of mine. I love the bottom eject.

the 37 was my first deer gun here in shotgun NY. ithica is an hour away so a lot of ithicas were used around here. two fold, great guns and local support. i have an 87 20 ga as well, just wish it had been still made in ithica. as true with a lot of the gun company's got into financial trouble along with mgmt, troubles i would guess and folded. the bottom eject was a plus for the lefty's. that gun should serve you well for a long time..... enjoy.....
