Festival of Freedom

Post by sabashimon »

I may not post much, but I have gained much insight over the months perusing and gleaning from so much experience on this forum, and I'd just like to wish a Happy Hanukkah to all my Jewish brethren here!

This non-religious holiday is perhaps best exemplified by Patrick Henry's memorable words:

"I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!"
"If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace."
Thomas Paine

"We sleep safely in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."
George Orwell

sabashimon,

I am not Jewish, but I will say "Happy Hanukkah" to you, too!

Any deeply held faith which gives you guidance and insight is a gift and asset to be celebrated and cherished, as long as that religious belief doesn't involve exterminating others who don't share that belief. Jews have been the victim of many who seek to exterminate those who don't share their athiesm or faith, and thus are among those who I feel great empathy for.

The Second Amendment is one of the issues I feel strongly about, for it is one of the ways a religious or ethnic minority can prevent persecution or outright genocide. (See R.J. Rummel, or Simkin, Zelman, Stevens, or the http://jpfo.org/ website).

True Christians don't hate or even disrespect other faiths - they only fear those who would use violence or government force on others, instead of simply preaching their faith and testimony honestly. True Christians would NEVER use the force of government guns against fellow citizens to enforce 'moral' behavior, as they realize morality is not really legitimate unless it is a CHOICE of 'free agency' - so nix to the 'drug war' or 'war on prostitution' or whatever the latest iteration of government-usurping-church-authority is.

IMHO we are all as humans lucky if we can view a 'segment of the pie' through our own particular religion; likely the 'whole pie' is something viewable only by those who have a special gift, or are in some phase other than the 'worldly' phase we on this forum are currently in. We should appreciate the fact that others of different faiths may view some parts of the pie better, if not some parts as well. We're all in this together.
