A little secret about Oregon Trail Cast Bullets...

I don't know how many of you know this, but the 170 grain flat point .310" bullets that Oregon trail sells are a gas check design.

They also sell their "True Shot" bullets and their 170 grain .310" flat point gas checked bullets cost twice the amount of their regular bullets of the same type...

Well, for another $3.00 per 100, you can upgrade the basic bullet and get a "True Shot" bullet.

Just need to have the gas checks and a sizer die set - I like Lee's bottom-push design.

Further, I use the supplied Liquid Alox and the resulting bullets are excellent.

Just thought I'd mention this. Both of their 30 cal flat point bullets look to be gas check designs. The rest of their regular bullets all seem to be bevel base.

No problem. I do cast my own but for $107 plus shipping you can have 1000 of these and have plenty for practice or hunting - $14/100. Pretty cheap by today's standards.

The way its going, you can't find wheel weights any more - everybody has a "contract" with their ww suppliers now for the scrap and won't sell. I've only got about 50 pounds left myself...

And buying lead alloy really jacks the price of casting up to only maybe a dollar less per hundered than buying the Laser Cast and applying a gas check. That is, it costs you $13 per 100 - alloy and gas check.

Since a lot of us here shoot 30-30's and other 30 caliber rounds, I thought I'd mention it.

These gc laser cast bullets are very accurate and with the liq alox applied, leave no leading at all - 1800-1900 fps.

Haven't tried them on game, but I see no reason that they wouldn't perform the same as other similar shape bullets.

This is a picture from a .44 Mag 240 gr RNFP LaserCast that came from my lion. This went through the skull, down the neck, and lodged in the spine between the shoulder blades (taxidermist recovered it for me, so I am not 100% what else it hit). Was pushing this one pretty quickly with H110.

Anyway, this is the first LaserCast I had recovered from game, and I was happy with the performance.

Since the supply of bulk Win and Rem jacketed 30-30 bullets is kinda drying up, would you have a load for that bullet that duplicates the factory 170gr jacketed velocity?

I know I've got some data somewhere, but the where is the problem.

Besides I can use that bullet in every one of my 30 cals if needed.

Joe - PM'd you - but I used 29 grains of W748 and got 1900 fps - and good groups. You could go to 32 and get the 2100 fps that you're looking for but I can't vouch for the accuracy of that.

Got the PM. 29- to 32 grains gives me a lot of room to work on a load. Gotta check on my funds and be sure that's what I wanna do.
