Sight Help, 1892

Post by rost495 »

Though I believe in making my guns as shootable as I can, I was about to file and adapt on the original sights of the 1892 I have.

Then it was suggested to save them and buy a new front sight and new rear or tang sight.

So I'm all open, for new front, new rear and new tang sight to go on, no drilling and tapping etc.... I want the gun to stay as original as it can. I prefer the tang aperture rear really.... especially since I can put in the size ap that I want.

And since I'm totally stupid to lever guns, especially old ones(only one I own is a never fired legendary lawman bought years ago out of stupidity and it sits in the safe....) the first hole on top of the tang closest to the hammer is empty.... It needs a screw I'm sure, have no clue where it goes or what it snugs too, but where do I find a screw?

PS for those worrying, dies showed up tonight, so next thing with the 32 is 100 xtps....

Thanks, Jeff

I'm assuming this is a Winchester 1892 and not a Marlin 1892.....

Front sight

Rear dovetail blank

You can find an original tang sight on ebay or a reproduction from Marbles, Lyman, or several other companies.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

The Lyman and Marbles tang sights come with a longer stock screw which is the rear screw for the sight, also included should be a front screw which then replaces the plug in that hole behind the hammer. For variety and maximum flexibility I'd recommend a Lyman 17A front sight with complete insert set.

You should not modify any original M.92 sights, just save them to replace if you sell the gun. Just figure out what you need and buy a new front sight. The tang sight needs to be just a little higher than the open sight. If you get too low the receiver will interfere with the true aperture view and you may need a slightly higher front sight to compensate for the higher rear sight or the gun will shoot high. The Lyman tang sight is less expensive. The Marbles is windage adjustable, but once you center your point of impact on the target you never change it anyway. I opt to shim the Lyman tang sight and/or shift the front sight a bit to center the point of impact, and save the added Marbles cost.
Remember, the sights drive out of their dovetails from left to right looking down the barrel.

Good to know on the tapered slot. I did not know they were like the taper pins on an AR.

I already tapped the rear sight to adjust windage, and it went both ways.

I'm already thinking the right lyman rear and a lyman front that will accept apertures etc.... Would make it much more shootable.

A replacement front sight blade, in the bead of your choice (Ivory/Gold/Fibre-optic/etc), the same height as the issue blade, will zero perfectly with either an open/iron barrel rear sight or a tang peep sight.

Another sighting option would be to replace the rear barrel sight with a Marble's folder ILO a slot filler blank.

The folding barrel sight may then be zeroed for short range/quick hunting shots; and the tang sight zeroed for more deliberate shooting at a longer range (after the barrel sight is folded).

Here's a Model 92 with the Lyman Tang mounted:

And here's a dual-sight setup:

The dual sights pictured are on a Winchester Model 94, but the sights are exactly the same & interchangeable with those for a Model 92.
