What do you use your guns for?
I think firearms are a little like golf clubs, each one is ideal for a certain task. While most any gun can "do it all", the reason for having multiple firearms for me is to do different things.
I'm working on setting mine up for:
Silhouette - tang sights and globe fronts w/ wide blade insert (.357, 30-30, and 35 Rem)
big game hunting - tang sight and globe front w/ crosshair insert (30-30)
indoor practice - scopes set on low power (.22 lr and .357)
small game hunting - scopes set on med power (.22 lr and .357)
I've found I didn't like carrying a 336 with a scope, plus if I need to take a long shot I'd rather do it with a tang sight than a scope. I don't like receiver sights either. I'm pretty comfortable with the tang sight system. I think I will want scopes for small game though because small critters are difficult to see from even a few yards away.
How have you set up your firearms for the shooting you do?

Re: What do you use your guns for?
The 'rules' about how personal a question one should ask are interesting, but understandable when you think how psychotic the anti-gun movement is. My lack of specific response is because I haven't thought about it in awhile, and was more intrigued by the previous responses. I'll give my general reflections though...
Guns DO fit 'niches' and some of the 'what if you could only have #xx guns' questions are fun exercises in just what they are good for and can be adapted to.
No different than figuring out what tools you REALLY need in that little under-seat tool box in your vehicle; and do you need different tools in the summer vs. winter, or city vs. rural.
I'll bet most of us USE our guns mostly for looking at, plinking and informal target shooting, with some shots for hunting, and very rarely actually 'use' them for self protection, and have likely never used them for any active 'militia' duties.
The IMPORTANCE of those uses in the big scheme of things is almost exactly the OPPOSITE of the frequency of the use though. Most gun owners own a spectrum of guns along the continuum.
The nice thing about leverguns is they easily adapt to just about all the uses. Throw in an M1A on the one end, and maybe a collector edition safe queen on the other, and then fill in the middle as desired

Either for hunting or on hand for self protection. I target shoot to maintain proficiency in those two areas. I hunt to eat and to keep alive the ancient in me. I purchase for self protection because I don't think some lazy no working scumbug who would rather steal than do an honest days work has the right to make me or my family a victim

Well I supose I am but there's a place I like to make lots of noise! 450 Marlins, 45-70s, short Barreled 44 Magnims, 30-06 with a 16" barrel. That's where I like to make some
Noise. in the woods or at the range. I'm always asked " What the H. was that?"
My outlet. Hunting or shooting. Doesn't matter. As long as they're not collecting dust. If they are, they go!

Guys, I've met El Chivo in SoCal. I'm seriously doubtful he is a "communist Big Brother" spy! He's just on a roll, thats all. No one needs to answer if they don't want to.
I like shooting steel targets at very long distances with iron sights myself. I keep hoping I might actually get good at it someday......

My guns are set up for various legal uses. Further, I don't use them as fence posts, marital aids or decoration.

Re: What do you use your guns for?
Kind of a silly question. Guns are for shooting. Now had he ask what do you shoot at, that would require a long and detailed description. Asking the question he did is sorta like when someone says "can I ask you a question?" I usually respond I don't know if they can or not. Leaves them completely confused. A few then say "may I ask you a question?" to which I usually respond no. Confuses the heck out of simpletons.

Re: What do you use your guns for?
i never used a gun as a crutch, or something to hold the wire down on barbed wire fence when crossing. Other than that, my old .22 single shot is fun to shoot hedge apples with using the factory sights.

Killin' stuff, from legal hunts to steel, maybe a few paper targets or water filled plastic jugs for effect.

Re: What do you use your guns for?
Aside from the .22's that I plink and target shoot with, most of my guns I use as a good place to store some of my ammo.

What guns? I only have pretty pictures - no real guns!
If I had real guns, I'd use them legally - for self defense, target shooting, plinking, and instructing young people, like my children, with object lessons in responsibility...

Re: What do you use your guns for?
Well, usually for a while and many for a long time but sometimes just a short period and then trade or sell them off...

OK, seriously, about 80% shooting holes in paper or walking a piece of progressively smaller wood around the berm. About 20% hunting.
In the past, I'd have included competitive shooting as well - but right now just those two things.
Oh, and in the event some seriously misguided individual decides to threaten/endanger me or my family with violence, well then I'd use them on him.

Re: What do you use your guns for?
That's pretty much what I was going for, to get ideas on setting up sights, choosing calibers, etc, for different types of shooting like silhouette, deer hunting, squirrel hunting, etc.Now had he ask what do you shoot at, that would require a long and detailed description
For those of you who read beyond the headline, I'm re-evaluating how my rifles are set up and sighted. For example I'm thinking of loading sabots in the 30-30 for coyote hunting.
Just trying to tap into the vast store of knowledge and ingenuity from the levergun community.
