MOVIES - Open Range
Saw Open Range finally, tivo'd it and somehow my recorder screwed up and didn't get the ending - which was probably the best part.
Went on youtube and found it in 3 or 4 sections.
In a word, wow! Anybody else like this movie?
I did notice the 30-30 and the single actions seemed to have a few extra bullets in them before reloading...
All in all, I loved it!
Now I just have to catch Beer for my Horses... that one never even taped...

Re: OT - Open Range movie
You gotta see it all - one of the all-time great Westerns, along with "Quigley Down Under" and "Lonesome Dove" (the series, also with Duvall). And yes, you will be glad to see the ending.
SPOILER:
The butler did it.

I've got the DVD, but every time I see it on TV I still watch it. Every time my wife says, "Don't you have that movie?" and my reply is always, "Yes, but I'll watch it anytime it's available!"

I didn't notice any .30-30's in the movie, but you're right....it was darn good! I bought the DVD as soon as it was available! I REALLY liked Annette Bening......hell, EVERYONE was good!
As far as Lonesome Dove, I think WallyWorld has it for $13........I just got Sam Elliot's You Know My Name at Menard's for $7.44.....LD will be next. jd45

Re: OT - Open Range movie
If you want to see a good DVD or movie with Sam Elliot get "The Quick and the Dead", no not the Sharon Stone one. This has Sam and Kate Capshaw(Spielbergs wife) in it. Made a few years ago and she is the most beautiful women(in this movie) I have ever seen. It is a good one. Agree on Lonesome Dove but I just can't take Costner, can't stand the man.

I just bought Broken Trail with Duval - great movie too. Add Unforgiven to the list and Jeramiah Johnson (just don't listen when they talk about the Hawkins being 30 caliber... ) A Man Called Horse. Little Big Man. Yeah.

Most of the rifles in OR were 1873 Winchester clones. Set too early for the '94.

Any votes for Tom Horn? Appaloosa looks real promising too. 1886.

I like most all of them, so long as they at least pay some attention to period correctness. I've got most of them too. I can't wait until Appaloosa comes out on DVD. Looks real good.

Re: OT - Open Range movie
You guys are right, I saw the levergun and thought of my Model 94 in the safe...
He DID have quite a few shots in there, so it must have been a pistol caliber lever - right?
Either way, I loved the ending - the double barrel shotgun, the part where he avenges the shooting of the boy (the broken-armed man), etc. The use of horses as cover in the street shootout... good stuff!
I like the Unforgiven, I need to see Lonesome Dove, and the other Duvall movie - I've got some catchin' up to do!
Southern Bamboo... now considering expanding his collection to include a pistol caliber levergun and a single action sixgun to go with it...

Welcome to the fire Southern Bamboo.
I've been a fan of westerns since I saw Stagecoach as a kid. I find it hard to get interested in a movie that has neither horses or single actions in it!

Don't forget "Big Jake" (my favorite John Wayne movie) and "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (my favorite Clint Eastwood movie). All the above are great flicks as well. That's the wonderful thing about westerns - they were MADE to see over and over again!!!

Welcome Southern Bamboo, I hadn't seen yer handle before.
I assume bamboo is a hobby or vocation. I need to be gettin some of that myself. It's great for around the house projects. Thomas Edison was a big fan of bamboo.
The Burl Ives movie I'd like to own is "Wind Across the Everglades" but repeated attempts to find it has gone unrewarded thus far.

Re: MOVIES - Open Range
Open Range is on my short list of favorite western movies.
Tombstone (Val Kilmer is Doc Holliday)
Sabre River (actually just about all the Selleck westerns are OK with me)
You Know My Name ( sorry but I am a Tilghman-3 Guardians junky)
The Shootist (John Waynes best picture in my opinion)
Actors are actors...Costner has his issues. My freinds tell me Sam Elliot is not well regarded in N Dakota or Montana and Wyoming and is a bit of a greenie-liberal. But they can act. Both seem to be good horseman.. a skill thats hard to fake in the kinds of film they work in.

Re: MOVIES - Open Range
I have Appaloosa reserved @ net flix soon as it comes out sometime in Jan. 09
The first big screen movie I remember seeing on my own I was 7.
It was "Nevada Smith" So of course I have to have it on DVD.
Not an all time favorite but it was enough to hook me.

I would'a slapped Doc silly if he'd 'a been like that...Nate Kiowa Jones wrote:You mean no body likes Tombstone with Val kilmer, the greatest Doc holiday ever?
Dennis Quade's Holiday was much closer to the mark.
BTW, Open Range is one of my favoritest movies, along with Broken Trail and Lonesome Dove. Anything with Tom Selleck gets my vote (even the silly little Shadow Riders) with Sam Elliott.
Got lots of other favorites too, more than I care to list here, and am seriously waiting for Appaloosa to apprear on DVD. Even my wife liked that one...

Buncha kids!!
Reach back for Glen Ford in "Cowboy".
Oh By the way, Regarding the comment about the .30 cal Hawkin in J.Johnson,
I've recently read an explanation which makes sense and may sooth your irritation.
The "old timers" never had micrometer measuring devices and the common method of sizing, among many, was the gauge rather than caliber, method. 30 gauge would put the ball weight at 233 gr. Seems to me that puts it into the 50's category for caliber.
Not looking for an argument here. Just pointing out a "balm" for those of us who noted the apparent error in the otherwise GREAT movie.

Re: MOVIES - Open Range
Open Range is probably the best of westerns in the last 20 years....behind Lonesome Dove of course, and Conager and....... Another sleeper that is very good is "Ride with the Devil" with Toby McGuire.
Edit: Monte Walsh has to be up there with Tom Selleck....but a sad movie to watch!

Another one here whose "short list" includes "Open Range". Add on "The Outlaw Josey Wales", and "Tombstone" is worth seeing a few more times.

Costner may not be to a lot of folks liking politically, but him and Duvall are born for "Open Range". That big shoot out at the end is one of the best ever in a movie. I still use VHS, got too many tapes and good VCR's to quit now, I do have an extra copy of Open Range.

Re: MOVIES - Open Range
I am in total agreement on Open Range, and so is my wife. We both agree that the movie taps into what was once the American spirit of self-sufficiency, Independence and justice. Likewise, the movie Tombstone, although hampered by a script that played fast and loose with historical accuracy, it did catch the feel of 1880's life. AMC's mini-series and later movie, Broken Trail also with Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden was a spectacular tribute to the genre.
Back in the 1960's when I was active in the horse show business the horse that starred in The Appaloosa, Cojo Rojo was making the show circuit more or less as special attraction. Cojo Rojo was a stallion racing at Bay Meadows at the time he auditioned for the movie. Unfortunately, the producers were looking for a black appaloosa and Cojo Rojo was a bay, so they dyed him black. His stunt double died while the movie was being filmed, so he did the stunts from there on. One movie critic notes that the appaloosa was supposed to be a stallion, but was missing some equipment, not realizing the anatomical differences between the stunt double and the star ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060120/ goofs). It is quite common for producers and directors to pass off differing animals during filming, something I catch quite frequently in westerns. In one scene a chestnut horse with a blaze and white stockings becomes a bay with black stockings as the scene progresses. The average urban dude these days wouldn't know a horse from a washboard, so it plays in Peoria. Here's a link to Cojo Rojo's site http://horsefame.tripod.com/appaloosa.html. I can only guess what the remake will bring.
Of course we know that horses aren't the only stuff they lose continuity on - the Colt Peacemaker and Winchester 92 or 94 in Civil War movies drives me nuts.

Re: MOVIES - Open Range
A bad western from any era is still better than most of the other stuff they put out nowadays. I get the western channel on cable and will watch a Gene Autry movie than a situation comedy on network T.V.
Happy Trails!
Re: MOVIES - Open Range
My faves of the Western Genre in no particular order:
Cheyenne Social Club: Fonda/Stewart inherit a Whorehouse. Comedy with Stewart as the straight man and Fonda as the lark.
Once Upon a Time in the West: Bronson/Fonda/Robards. Fonda is the meanest villain of all time. Bronson with a grudge. Great Plot.
Lonesome Dove the Mini Series: What everyone else has said before.
My Name is Nobody: Fonda/Terrence Hill . A light look at the Western Genre. Sergio Leone poking fun at the Western Genre.
Open Range: What everyone has said before
The Big Country: Peck/Ives/Heston/Conners...what a bunch of big framed actors. A real joy to watch. A western with a plot.
The Good The Bad & the Ugly: Eastwood/Van Cleef/ Wallach: The greatest Leone directed scene of all time...Eli Wallach in the Graveyard. Don't Miss...
McKenna's Gold: Peck/Savalas/Sharif. Peck again searching for gold. Good Music score.
The Outlaw Josey Wales: Eastwood with a grudge.
Quigley Down Under: Australian western with a unique story.
I may have missed a couple....

Has everyone forgotten Tom Horn? We are going to remedy that real soon. Smiles, 1886.
Re: MOVIES - Open Range
I really like "Paint Your Wagon", a western musical where both Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin sing! Did a pretty good job of it too.
Also liked Monte Walsh a lot.
Open Range is excellent, no doubt about it. When Costner holds back his tendency to preach, he can really do a great job.

Southern Bamboo stands for me, a southerner, who likes to fish using bamboo fly rods...
I made one, and fish it as often as she allows...
One movie I didn't like was 3:10 to Yuma, the modern remake. Ok movie, predicted the ending, but I didn't see it living up to the hype - everyone said I had to go see it.
I need to catch Broken Trail, I tried to when it was on cable but missed it. I need to see if there is a service online somewhere to tell me when these old movies are on - too many channels to monitor!

Re: MOVIES - Open Range
I think Open Range has the most realistic gunfighting I've seen, it really rocks.
I just watched "Support Your Local Sheriff" last weekend.
A recent find for me was Broken Lance, where Spencer Tracy is a ranch owner with 4 sons who fight over his land after he dies (sort of like a dysfunctional Bonanza). I liked Big Country also.
Another Gregory Peck western I liked was Mackenna's Gold - it's a little hokey, but fun and has great scenery. Every two-bit Hollywood actor makes an appearance.
Now, I also decided to try a John Wayne flick, and bought "Rio Bravo". It was about as corny as it could get. I'll have to watch it again to give it a chance. But I'm not sure if the Duke is my cup of tea.

I also have Open Range on dvd. It's a great western. With all the westerns mentioned, don't forget Monte Walsh with Tom Selleck...gotta be one of my favourites. Of course Lonesome Dove takes the prize.

Note to Some:
The NEW Appaloosa is NOT a remake of the older movie by the same name -- no more than the Sharon Stone version of The Quick & the Dead is a remake of the Sam Elliott/Kate Capshaw effort of that name.
So Many Movies; So Little Time...
