Guns season so far - Barnes praise - *Graphic*

Post by deerwhacker444 »

Well, it's midway thru the Oklahoma rifle season and I still haven't seen anything I'd like to harvest yet. However my uncle and dad both shot bucks so I thought I'd post them.

This first one is my uncle. Before anyone comments, my uncle is from the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia. The only hunting he gets to participate in is when he comes to OK during Thanksgiving. So, while this deer might not be a gigantic trophy for some he's happy with it and that's all that matters. This guy had been fighting because he had broken off G2 & G3 on one side and they were both fresh breaks. He dressed out at 115 lbs. About average for our area

Image

He hunts with a .270 so I loaded up some 110gr. Barnes Triple Shocks @3000 fps for him. The load worked perfectly as shown by the following pics. The first one is entry, the next one is exit. I really like this load, recoil is mild and the 110 gr. bullet performs great.

The last pic is my dad.

Now my dad is typically not the best shot when he's shooting at deer, he gets buck fever real bad. I wont say he's a bad shot, but I will say that he regularly tests bullet construction and performance with his shots  . Dad was using a .243 loaded with an 85 gr. Barnes Triple Shock bullet @ 3200 fps. The deer was quartering away and dad tried to make the shot behind the rib and take out the vitals. Unfortunately, he shot the deer about 4 inches to the side of the tail. The 85 gr. bullet traveled thru the hind quarters into the body cavity hitting the stomach and part of the liver before exiting thru the far side rib cage as shown in the pic. Although the deer did travel a bit, we were able to recover it stone dead. I think he dressed out at 110 lbs. I am really impressed with the performance of that little 85 gr. bullet. IMO, that's alot of material to pass thru and still do damage. I have yet to recover a Barnes bullet from any of the 5 deer and 2 coyotes we've taken with the Barnes Triple Shocks.

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving and wishing luck to those of us who still haven't tagged out.

That's only because it's his choice!! We have excellent hunting here in CA and nobody is denied the opportunity to hunt.

Great pictures. Glad the hunt went so well for y"all. Thanks for the pics.

I know two hunters in my family who would have been danged pleased to shoot your uncle's buck. They're eating tag soup this winter.

A 85gr at 3200 fps through the stomach. Make a little bit of a mess? :D

Two nice deer, I'd of shot either one.
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.

I use the same 85 at about 2800 in an AR in 6mm. It will still go stem to stern at over 200 yards. Had to follow a blood trail a bit worse than normal but she was dead when we found her. Given she was looking at me and knew we were there when I shot, I didn't expect anything but a death run.

+1

Yeah, me! So far... tag soup

The only thing I will say is I usually use a bit heavier bullet bit TSX's are great killing bullets and obviously worked in both cases!

First class report there and thanks, a friend was wondering about a tougher bullet for his 270. I know what I'll suggest now :D

I would take that in a heartbeat, saw about 20 does and yearlings this year, no bucks.

Congratulations. They look good to me.

110 grain in a .270 sounds interesting. Jr. has his grandfather's old Remington. that might be something to try in that. thanks for that information well.

Yes midway through the Oklahoma rifle season & I haven't yet shot a deer myself.

I've seen only about 15 total and only 2 were bucks. None presented a shot. On the doe days I haven't seen anything. The doe's must have read the book.

I generally use my browning .243 A bolt, & have harvested deer with an 85 gr sierra. A shot to the neck and they drop in their tracks. I now prefer the 100 gr. All ammo is hand loaded.

To keep it somewhat on topic I do on occasion grab my Marlin 30 30 and have harvested a few with it as well. same kind of shot.

Deer in my area run about the same size as OP stated. An 8 pt. will generally field dress around 135. A doe might field dress in the 85 lbs range. A few years ago my son killed a 12 pt. on our 35 acre pasture that weighed 245 lbs. before field dressing. Old timers areound here stated it was the 2nd largest they had ever seen from these woods. He killed it with a .270.
