This season, after four years of having my daughter tell me she wanted to go hunting with me and backing out at the last minute, she finally decided that she was serious about going. Naturally I was excited about having her tag along with me on the first day of rifle season and she seemed to be excited too. Opening morning I woke her up at 4 AM to take a bath, fed her breakfast and we headed out. When we reached our hunting area I gave her some of my hunting clothes including the smallest pair of camo pants I had… They were too large of course so we cinched up the drawstrings on the sides which helped but they were still just a bit loose. I thought they’d be OK so I loaded up with the gear I was going to carry and handed her two small stools to carry and we set out just before daybreak for our hunt. When I was about 50 yards away from the truck I realized that my daughter wasn’t following me. I turned around to look and saw her standing 20 yards from the truck with a stool under each arm and her hands at her hips. Walking back to her I said “What are you doing? We need to hurry!” only to find that that’s as far as she had made it before the pants had succumbed to gravity. She had them back up by the time I noticed that she wasn’t following but I had to laugh just a bit at the thought. I went ahead and took the stools from her at that point so that she could concentrate on more important things and we continued on to our hunting spot. I set up a blind and we crawled in and sat down on the stools to wait. About 10 minutes later, a buck trots out of the draw traveling across the wheat to an adjacent canyon so I slid over and made sure my girl could see him and readjusted for the shot. She watched through a corner window while I made the shot and dropped the buck where he stood. After a high-five, a hug and a few giggles she said “let’s go look at him!” I told her that we needed to wait for a few minutes and that if we waited, we might see some does. It was all the poor girl could do to contain herself while we waited so before long we walked over to recover our deer. When we reached it and verified that he was finished we exchanged hugs and began the process of dragging him the 400 yards to the nearest point I could drive to, her with one hand on an antler and the other on her pants lest gravity get the better of them …again. We had a ball hunting together even though it was brief and perhaps she’ll want to go again next year.
Excellent, my girls have no desire to hunt, I'm hoping my neice will get more interested in the future.
Her problem is not having the time.
