Smokeless Load for Chaparral '76, .45-75

Post by SR James »

Man, I take a short levergun break to go play with my muzzleloaders for a few weeks and you guys go and move again! I'm starting to feel like that kid who came home from school and found his parents had moved and left no forwarding address :) But I tracked you down...

Anyway, ran out to the range to try a smokelss load in the Chaparral '76 .45-75. The 200m range was pretty crowded to I went to the short (80m) range. Shot this group using 28gr AA 5744 under a Sierra 300gr JHP, brass made from .348 Win. The rifle is wearing the short Malcolm scope I posted a pic of several weeks ago. Wish I could get this rifle to group this well with cast bullets.

Antlerless deer season is a week from today, so looks like the '76 is ready....if it doesn't rain. That little 3/4" scope doesn't do well in the rain. Doesn't fog, but its really hard to see through the water droplets that get on the objective lens.

Good shooting. I saw a new one for sale last week. i spent about 20 minutes with the rifle giving it a good look over and getting the general feel for the piece. I really liked it but the shop also had an 86 take down .45-90. It is great to walk into your favorite candy shop and finding two nice leverguns. I wish I had the funds for both but I had to settle on just one so the 86 came home with me. I made this decision primarily do to availability. The 86 would probably be hard to find again in person so I settled on it. A 76 is in my future though. Just one question, were are the pics of the shootin iron? Good Luck. 1886.

Mr. James,
Congrats. That's a sweet looking group (for a levergun) :P Just kiddin'! That's a very close load to my .40-90SBN in my Sharps (27.5gr of AA5744 behind my 350 cast). Very manageable and accurate.
