As to scope mounting you don't mention which model of the 1894. Condition being a big part of value, you don't mention that either. My OLD Win 94 .44 Mag didn't shoot that high with the 180s but every gun is different.

Re: winchester 1894 44mag
The higher than normal point of impact could be the result of any one, or a combination of a few, things.
180gr ammo, being lighter than the "standard" .44Mag 240gr load, usually impacts higher than the 240's.
Your friend might not be holding the rifle correctly or tightly enough - allowing it to rise in recoil (while the bullet's still in the barrel) more than most shooters would.
The buttplate could also be sliding down on his shoulder during firing - a nono.
50 yards is normally a mid-trajectory distance, and too short a distance to zero the .44 Mag.
The rifle should be zeroed for more like 100yds, where the bullet will cross the line-of-sight 2X - once(rising) at around 27yds, and again (falling) at 100yds.
If the rifle is D/T'd atop the receiver ring & side rails, it's an AE and Weaver scope mount bases are readily available.
If the side is D/T'd for a scope, it would have had to have been a gunsmith job, where the owner generally keeps the sidemount with the rifle.
The gun can also be "scout scoped", with an XS LeverScout mount base mounted on the rear sight dovetail and a D/T'd front receiver ring top - with a Pistol scope or an Intermediate Eye Relief scope or a Scout scope.
Just my $0.02, but I think your pistol has a tad more value; but then, If you like the rifle.....................
