PA OPEN DEER SEASON STARTS ON MONDAY
Here it is, just days before the season and I have yet to decide which rifle I am going to use for opening day. Not sure if its .357, 30-30, 45-70. Whether its NKJ, Marlin, WWG, or Sharps. I thought it would be the Marlin since it hasn't hunted for decades. NKJ hasnt made blood yet but I am looking forward to it doing so. The other two already have made meat this year. I'm thinking the ancient in me is calling for the Marlin, to loose its soul in the function it was made. I have two weeks to fill two tags. Monday will come early and I will be on the ridge once again. Anyone else have problems deciding what your opening day rifle will be? The shots here will be very close.

No, I didn't have any trouble choosing. I grabbed the 470NE.
My county was included in the antler point restriction for the first time this year and I never got a clean shot at a legal buck. The antlerless portion of the season is coming up in a couple weeks and I may go pop a doe just to put some meat in the freezer.
Whatever rifle you choose, good luck!

Opening day, since I'll be on my own, I plan on hunting bucks only and having my Savage 114 with me. It has a scope, and with NW PA's 4 point on one side restrictions, I'm going to need it. After that, if I driving woods and brush with friends, I'll have my .30-30 or .25-35.

Re: PA OPEN DEAR SEASON STARTS ON MONDAY
Well man, I'll need to be sure and keep my Dear out of the PA woods for a while then
Oh, you mean deer.
And yes, I have too many deer capable rifles and handguns too.
It seems abusive to leave all of the others in the safe while I take just one or maybe two (one backup) with me hunting.
You know, some guys don't have this problem at all -they grab their one deer rifle and head out.
Good hunting guys.

if it's raining/snowing which is the forecast for monday, i'll take the 94-bb .356 wcf. if not, the old scoped blr. .308wcf. either will do, just got to get the buck to walk in front of my sights.

I'm heading to the cabin in NW PA tomorrow. Can't wait. Sure could use a few days in the woods. Taking my Marlin 450 Scout rifle and my .33 WCF / 1886. So far I only have a few rounds put together but I feel pretty comfortable with it. Sure carries nicely.
Sure hope this season's better. Been skunked two years in a row and could't make it last year.

Re: PA OPEN DEER SEASON STARTS ON MONDAY
I hunted Mon. and Tues. of the PA bear season with my Marlin Guide 45-70 with the XS peep, all without luck - it was probably the first year in 10+ that our gang did not get a bear. We cut some tracks late in the day on Mon. but that was about it.
For deer season - I'll be taking 3 guns to camp... my Remington 7600 30-06 carbine with a leupold 2-7x scope, my 1950ish Winchester 94 in 30-30 with a Lyman peep, and either the Marlin 45-70 or my 1903 Win. 1894 full rifle with a Lyman tang on it.
For Monday it will be the Remington 7600, since I'll be in a treestand most of the day - then after that, probably one of the 30-30's - since my feet will be on the ground and chasing them instead of waiting for them....
Good luck to all...

Re: PA OPEN DEER SEASON STARTS ON MONDAY
I live in WV, just across the PA line. I shot a decent 8-point in WV on Wed. on our farm. I was really looking forward to hunting PA this year, but unfortunately I do not think my leg is going to allow me to hunt PA this year. Maybe later in a week or two. It is a shame because we have been seeing a lot of nice bucks in Greene County where they have the antler rerstrictions. I have heard a few complaints about the AR in Greene County, but I am not complaining. The bucks in the area I hunt are definitely getting a bit older. However we still have a doe problem, way to many does. maybe I can get my flinter out for the late season and wait for a buck. Tom.

Re: PA OPEN DEER SEASON STARTS ON MONDAY
Monday & Tuesday will find me on the Army Depot (slugs only)
for the PA. opener. I will be using the Browning BPS 12ga.
A nice overdo change is it’s buck only Mon. thru. Friday in this PA. zone this yr.
Then Saturday, it’s back to buck and doe.

No problem for me.
For 17 years of the last 20 it was my Savage 340 in 30-30 and 170gr cor-locs and now its my Marlin 30-30 and 173gr cast.

Re: PA OPEN DEER SEASON STARTS ON MONDAY
took dad out to hunt chestnut ridge this morning. in 36 years of hunting, i never seen more hunters on the mountain, the preverbial hunter behind every tree. dads legs gave out about 12;30, so we headed back. he's 88 yrs old and doesn't move as quick as he used to. still he has better vision than i do and can still out shoot me with any firearm, except fot the .45acp, can't quite figure that one out, though. no deer, next day off is next monday, gonna try it again then
