A Lever, A Semi-lever, and a Mauser

Post by SR James »

Been a while since I posted, but I thought I'd share the results of our weekend deer hunt in western Oklahoma. On the left is me with my 8 pt. taken with my .45-70 High Wall & Malcolm scope. Load was a Lyman cast 300gr. Gould hollowpoint over 65grs of Swiss 2F. This is the 5th deer taken with this gun/load and the only one that didn't drop in its tracks...it ran almost 30 feet! Range was about 85 yds.

The middle pic is my co-worker and hunting partner Lee with his little 4x3 taken with a Marlin in .32 Win. Spl. This rifle belonged to the wife of Lee's father's hunting partner, Bob. Bob purchased it for his wife Bernie back in 1953 for the sum of $50. Bernie used it to take 41 deer until she stopped hunting several years ago. Last year they gave the rifle to Lee and this is now the second deer he's taken with it, bringing the total to 43.

The third pic is Lee's son Jason with his big 8 pt. A really nice buck. Jason used a Venzuelan Mauser 98 24/30 in 7x57 to take this buck at a range of about 60 yds. It field dressed at 163 lbs.

In addition to the bucks, each of us filled our doe tags as well. This was the first year the ranch owner had allowed us to take bucks and what a hunt it turned out to be. Beautiful weather, the bucks were in full rut...couldn't ask for more.

Congratulations all, and man, that IS a nice rack on the buck that your buddy's son got. The tines are not super long, but the bases and spread are great. About how old was that deer estimated to be?

Wow - nice! Congrats to all!

How were you guys hunting? Out of tree stands, ground blinds, sitting on the ground, still hunting, etc.?

Inquiring minds want to know :)

Looks like some happy hunters!

That 1885 is sharp. How do you like the Malcolm scope?

That 300gr round sonds like a keeper.
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.

Sllmster: I estimate the big buck to be around 6 but when I asked Lee hadn't checked his teeth yet. The tines are really worn blunt. The area where he was shot was really torn up from him fighting other bucks and he had several scrapes on his neck and shoulders.

O.S.O.K.: we were mostly hunting by using natural cover to watch known trails. We also do some still hunting. This ranch has lots of deer and we know the areas we hunt pretty well. Plus the rut was in full swing with great weather so the deer were really active.

2ndovc: I really like the Malcolm. This is my third season with it. It holds zero and has never fogged. But in a steady rain, it's hard to see through if the objective gets covered in water drops as it's only a 3/4" tube. It's not on a par with a modern scope, but for me that's the whole point. I like to go a little primitive.
