Replacement front sight for Browning B92 357 mag

Post by stormspotter »

I have a Browning B92 357 mag with a 3/8 dovetail front sight. The blade is thinner than I like and I am looking to replace it with a Marble's or William's front sight. My question is, do the Marble's or William's front sights have a lip past the front dovetail? With the dovetail cut right at the back of the barrel band, there is no room for any overhang on the front end of the sight. Any lip or extension on the rear is no problem but the front has to come straight up from the dovetail so the barrel band won't be in the way.

If Nate or anyone else has replaced a front sight on a B92, I would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks

I will keep skinner sights in mind, but I am looking for something that has an ivory bead on the front sight.

stormspotter,

If your front sight is dovetailed, then I think it is not original. Your front sight should look like this one:

Hagler, my front sight is just like the one you showed, but the blade is not pinned in. The base and blade are one piece, with a dovetail on the base. The picture below is not the best, but it is a factory front sight.

Earlier I did a search on replacing the front sight for Browning B92's and found others who had B92 357's that had a dovetail front sight. I don't know if Browning had the style changed in mid production, but evidently there are others with dovetail front sights. I will try to find them again and post a link abut it.

Below is the link where I found Charlie Z saying he had a B92 with a dovetail front sight (his 3rd post down).

I don't mind the flat blade, it's a little thin to suit me, but I have tried painting it and the paint will not stay on well. The front is not groved and it chips off easily. I would like to find a replacement with a larger white bead.

stormspotter,

"Charlie Z", in 2005, says that his B92 is "a couple of years old". He also says that he has a "Brownchester", and calls it a rifle. Then he points to this link:

http://www.winchesterguns.com/prodinfo/ ... 9&cat=014C

All of that tells me that Charlie Z does NOT have a B92. He has a recent-production Miroku/ Winchester.

I have never seen your setup. Can you post a better picture of yours?

stormspotter, pick the sight that you like and just file off the back side to clear the band, contour as required, then apply some cold blue touch up.

Not a pinned blade ...the blade is a milled part of the base which is not made to drift for windage I believe the base is brazed in a small cut made in the barrel

Thats it, Ben. I couldn't tell that it was brazed, but can see the cut in the barrel which is why I thought it was removeable.

I have been painting the front, flat part of the blade, but since it's not groved the paint keeps chipping off. I guess I'll just have to keep touching it up.

Serial # is 03498PX1xx

Thanks for all the help.

It's funny how different eyes and hands can be in their preferences. I would be happy if the my B92 front sight was on every iron-sighted rifle I owned, along with a Lyman aperture rear.

If mine were the pinned type I'd have a slightly thicker post in there from .062"that's there now to .080"

I can vouch that it's a shooter. Youngest son dropped a medium sized doe, at about 45 yards, with a shot to the base/left side of her neck and exited midway rightside of her rib cage. The 158gr. HP made a mess of her insides and she was DRT.

My Browning 92 44 had the rear face of the front blade dimpled with a drill spot, and a touch of white paint in it. It's held up well.

Some of the 92's had the blade pinned in, and some had the one piece base/blade. The barrel is round under the base, no cut. I've bought several replacment bases for use on other rifles, and they were rounded on the bottom. I think what you are seeing is the silver brazing on the edges of the base looking like a slot.

You could have a machinist or gunsmith slot the base like in the picture Hagler posted to use a different blade in, or hand cut it carefully with a jewelers file.
