OT - SoCal Hunting or was it?

Post by bsaride »

Well, here's how my weekend went.

Late start Saturday (approx 10:30AM) with an old high school budy, Ray.
Looking for a place to bear hunt, deer hunting ended last weekend.

Headed out to San Bernardino NF, had to slow down for the fire on the ridge
in Yorba Linda (looky-looes), smoke hadn't gotten down to the freeway yet.

The goal was to find access into the area south of Mill Creek Canyon and
north of the 10 freeway, what I would call Oak Glen. The area is famous for
apple orchards. Well it looks like it's all closed by private property owners.
We did find one spot that was closed due to high fire danger and one small
hill that wasn't closed on the back side that may be OK for a day outing
(only 3/4 of it private property). We don't have dogs and therefore were
looking for sign in an area worthy of setting up for glassing the following day.

Then headed up highway 38 to the Seven Oaks area and headed west to camp
at Bear Creek which would be a good jumping off spot for where I wanted to
scout on Sunday.

Arrived at Bear Creek about 5:30PM, just after dusk. We had decided to make
it a cold camp and just brought food and drinks to eat cold. Parked the truck,
set out the chairs and coolers and setup beds behind the truck. Tarp under
sleeping bags with no tent. Got cold until about 7:30 when a warm wind blew
and made camp nice. I ended up getting only about 3 hrs sleep because I was
staring at the moon most of the night. Broke camp early and crossed the creek
to find another area closed to high fire danger. Ended up scouting several other
areas and only found old sign and a couple of hunters pushing bears with dogs.

Well, this being the leverguns place ya should know what we were carrying.
Ray brought a Dan Wesson 357, 12 gauge 870 and a Marlin 36ADL in 30-30.
My first look at it and haven't dated it yet, D prefix s/n, the ADL makes it
1940-1948. I took my new S&W 21-4 44 Spcl and 1908 1893 30-30.
No shots were fired.

After checking out a few more gates on the south end above Mentone we
headed home. Radio was talking about the fires but it sounded like we could
get home without a detour. We got into town and I turned on my cell and found
both daughters were worried about me and fire. So while Ray refilled the gas
tank, I had some messages to send.

How did your weekend go?

bsaride,
I grew-up in the Yorba Linda area in the late '40s to about 1968. I still have friends there. They are safe as of now.

We spent a lot of time hunting in an area known as Carbon Canyon, lots of small rabbits, crows, coyotes, a few deer and pheasants in the orange groves. In those days, the whole county was covered mostly with fruit-trees of some kind. Probally less than 200 people lived in YL. The only school was in Brea. It was quite common to see guns in every car in the school parking-lot. Every once in a while, a student would mention in school that a parent had to run a bear off their back porch...... Ah, the good old days :D

I had a .270 Win. back in those days and was top-dog in those parts, as most had a .22 and a 12 ga. shot-gun.

It was good to hear about your present-days hunt in that area.

Kodiakk its been a long time since you could hunt Carbon Canyon. Its all private now except for the state park. :(

BSArider i know most of that area it sucks that so much of it is private soon the only open areas will be small pockets of BLM surounded by houses :(

Hunting has been poor down south for a few years. The fires the last several have really put a hurt on it. Best start looking northward. That's where I was supposed to hunt this year. The boys had it scoped out, but it fell apart with one a almost rookie cop (guess who had to work when the seasons open), another in school, and me getting snowed in with work. Oh well, next year.

I've been busy with work and didn't get a chance to deer hunt.
I would have gone into Cleveland NF south of Ortage Hwy.
But there are no bears in CNF.

Carbon Canyon and Chino Hills are gone after this weekends fire.

Couple months back took neice on her first rabbit hunt in all my old
places (haven't hunted in about 10 yrs) we ended up driving 5 hrs
and 200 miles looking at private property, lol. I have since gotten
what I believe is good intel on a place to hunt within 2 hours of home.
