Really nice buck, congratulations. I'd like to hear more about the hunt and the Hawk bullet. I thought about ordering some but can't make up my mind. I've heard good and bad reports.

Thanks All,
The rifle is a Marlin 1895 re chambered by David Clements to his proprietary cartridge the .348 DC. It is formed from 45/70 cases, case length is 2.0 inches. From what I can tell this cartridge adds about 50 fps to the .348 winchester stats. Of course another advantage is the ability to mount a scope on the rifle. It is a very nice albeit expensive rifle.
I was hunting in my usual spots here in Utah when I spotted this deer at approx. 250 yards across a canyon. At first I could not see antlers thru the 3X scope. Switching to my bino's I just got a glimpse of an antler as the deer walked into the trees.
I continued side hilling up the canyon as did the deer which actually closed the distance between us with each step. The deer stepped out in the open for a moment and I sat down and took a shot but missed.I knew that I had to have a dead rest to make the shot so I rolled over onto my chest and elbows and braced my self against a dead limb. The deer stopped behind some tree at about 200 yds. I could just see his chest and centered the cross hairs on what I could see. When I shot ,the deer bolted about 10 feet forward and out of site. About 30 seconds later I heard a LOUD crash and knew the deer was down.
The Hawk bullet has proven to be dead nuts accurate and hit exactly where I aimed. My butcher said the bullet passed thru the deer striking a rib on the far side, then bounced back to the entry side and lodged against a rib. The recovered bullet had a perfect mushroom and weighed 161 grains. Jacket and core were found together. Personally, I like complete penetration but the bullet did it's job well. I may try the 200 grain Hawk or the 200 gr. Hornady next year. Down side is I loose 100 fps. with a 200 gr. bullet.

I'm all for a .348 whether it's a Marlin conversion or a 71. Something about the sound of a .348 going off in the deep timber that tells anyone nearby who heard it that something may well have lived it's last. Nice post, I'm happy for your rifle and that great deer.
