I have a trip planed for this sat with my son if everything goes right. I've heard of different ways of fixing the squirrel in Brunswick stew or in gravy. someone even told me about eating the brains one time. That's the one way I've never tried them. Anybody know how to fix squirrel brains like grandma used to??
BTW this is on topic cause I'll be using my M39

Re: Squirrel huntin
Rusty,
The old timers fried them (brain) in a cast iron skillet. The only time I ever had them was with scrambled eggs and they were mixed in with the eggs. Try smother frying the squirrels in the skillet, then make up a good white gravy and cover and simmer. What are you doing squirrel hunting on the opening day of general gun season?

I, too, love squirrel hunting, but I strongly suggest you NOT eat the squirrel's brains!!!!
In western Kentucky some time back, they noted an unusually high rate of Creutzfeldt-Jakob's disease -- the
human equivalent of Mad Cow Disease. Investigators found that the 11 victims (over a 4-year period) ALL ate squirrel brains, considered a local delicacy. The rate of infection per population density was MUCH higher than it should have been. One should not eat central nervous system tissue (i.e., brains, spinal cord, etc.) of cows, elk, deer, etc., due to possible presence of prions which can transmit the disease. It also appears you may be at risk for this if you chow down on squirrel brains. Perhaps it's only in certain areas of the country, but why take the chance on a horribly debilitating terminal illness? Here's a link that gives the latest update:

Hope this helps,

"Pistols do not win wars, but they save the lives of the men who do. The noble 1911 is a mechanical marvel, whose ruggedness, dependability & ferocious power have comforted four issues of GIs and which, unlike any other instrument you can name, is as much superior to its rivals today as it was in 1917."

Re: Squirrel huntin
Never quite cottoned to eating the brains of anything. I figured that Brains were for Tanning. Meat & Organs were for eating, guts were for stuffing & fur/leather was for clothing.
I'm kinda old fashoned that way.
Squirrels and rabbits end up as Fried Legs &/or Pulled Meat BBQ.

Re: Squirrel huntin
I never thought about eatin' brains. Every squirrel I ever shot had it's brains scrambled up with lead poisioning.

Help your own self, the Government is to busy savin' thierselves.
