Can I jump in on this action? I'm new to the forum but have been huntiong these areas for a few years. I like Bannister the best, just north of Angelina, but the others are good as well. I live over in Tyler, and work for TPWD. So, am I in?

Bonedigger - of course - this is open to any members here and their family, friends, etc..

Any suggestions for good camping the best bets for hunting areas will be much appreciated!

I just thought it would be a good time to get together with the other lever enthusiasts - I enjoy group camps and shoots and if this hunt works out well we can do it every year - maybe several times to give more people a chance to get in on it.

I've got to get my new license for this year - I'd like the specifics for drawing doe tags on public land - yes!

Go to the following link for the doe tag drawing. You have to have a valid hunting license and Type II permit for these.

I was looking in my maps book and realized that Bannister is the Angelina NF, NOT the Sabine NF with is the Moore Plantation WMA. Oh Well, different forest, but I can do some doe hunting.

Bannister has some good hunting. Lots of deer there. In fact, it's my favorite area. Look me up before you go and I can give you some ideas of where to hunt.

BoneDigger,
Thanks, I'll do that. I've hunted Moore before but never Bannister. I've been looking at some (computer) maps but will probably need to pick up some topo's. I don't know that I will have time to scout much.

I just submitted mine - but I had to choose - Bannister is Angalina - Moore Plantatin is Sabine - I selected Sabine... hope that's right.

ETA - oh - just read up - yeah, good Moore Plantation.

The sight is still up and running guys - so give it a whirl!

Set some dates guys - we can make a party several times - which will help to learn the place and increase our odds at success. I'd be up for an earlier trip too!

How long did it take from the time of application to you receiving your permit notices?

With all of the rain, we could be seeing an overpopulation...

I sent mine in at the end of August and just received it. I don't know if they draw these all at once or if they keep drawing throughout October.

I'll propose a couple of dates this weekend.

If you have a doe permit... can't you get a doe and use a tag for a buck? That was my understanding... but I'd be very happy to take a nice fat doe.

And I'm thinking that if I bring one or both of my sons... that would allow them a better chance...

Yes, you can take more than one deer a day. So, you could let your son take a doe, then you take a buck (of course, just keep that to yourself since the doe tag isn't transferable). I'm pretty sure the antler restrictions are in place in that county, so it has to be either a spike or greater than 13".

How would you guys feel about goiong out to Bannister on the 15th or 22nd? Actually, I probably would go up earlier, maybe on Thursday, but if you want to do a weekend, we can have a meeting then. Let me know. If these dates aren't good, we can move them. I am flexible.

Mid-November should see fewer hunters (although Bannister is far less crowded than Angelina). Also, it should have cooler temps and maybe less mosquitos. There is a motel in town that's cheap, or we could camp. Or, just make it a day hunt.

Oh, and I'm still open for December as well.

Ideas?

Just curious.......will this hunt be for lever rifles only. Could be kind of fun to see different rifles used and owned. Of course I'd have to pull a trailer to bring them all!!

I think the concept here is just to get some of us together and have a fun time hunting. I don't know if the intent is to only use lever guns. OSOK was the originator so he can shed some light. I expect to hunt with my .35 remington, but I'd sure like to see some other rifles!

I took the Marlin 336 out last weekend for the first time (been busy) and was absolutely blown away by how accurate it is. I bought this used, but in great shape, locally and it is a late 70s model. I took the cheap scope off and replaced it with a Williams peep sight with fiber optic front sight. In five shots I was shooting dead center at 100 yards! This was Lever-evolution ammo.

This is the .35 Remington version and I think I am REALLY going to like this gun/caliber!

I can't wait to go hunting with it!

Is anyone going hunting this weekend, anywhere? I hunted a few times with the recurve but didn't see anything locally. I was mostly scouting and looking for hog sign. I try to skip opening of gun season for obvious reasons.

So, keep me posted on the hunts!

Well, at least I have some meat for the freezer! A friend of mine killed a 150 lb sow this morning and didn't have time to skin it out so he called me to see if I want it. It's now cut up and in the cooler on ice waiting for me to do final processing! Yum, pig tenderloin tonight!
