Marlin 1894 .44mag 16" barrel

Post by sabashimon »

I'm looking for some opinions here (where better to ask?)
I'm thinking of buying a used Marlin 1894s .44mag with 16" barrel.
I have a Uberti in .357 and love it.
I guess my question centers around the round (.44mag). This would mostly be a self defense weapon, with thoughts towards hunting if the situation dictates it.
Thanks fellas

I think it would make a very handy hiking, hunting, plinking and self defense gun. You'd have an 8 or 9 shot capacity. With a sling it would be much handier than a 20" 1894, and should be easier to shoot accurately than any revolver. If you have a chance to buy one, I'd say do it.

You don't mention price - that'd the the determining factor - not the rifle or the round IMHO.

The only "negative" on the 44 Mag leverguns is that the manufactures insist on puttin slow-twist barrels on them - 1:38" so they are limited to 250 grain or lighter bullets for accuracy - usually.

But you can do a lot with that. With 200-240 grain gold dot bullets or xtp's it'd be an excellent defensive carbine.

Marlins are easy to scope too...

I'm waiting for pictures, but it sounds to be in excellent condition.

I have a 94S in 45 Colt and a 94P / 44 mag with the 16" barrels and love them both.

The 44 goes everwhere with me and my favorite "camp" gun.

$450 does not seem to be a bad price. I doubt you'll be dissapointed.

$450 is fair - not great, but fair. Especially if you avoid the ffl transfer and shipping- if he's local and you can do a face to face (totally legal in most places).

There's one of these on gunbroker right now for $395 - but shipping and ffl transfer fee too....

Nice rig 2ndovc.

Appreciate the opinions, thanks.
2ndovc, where did you get your buttstock cartridge carrier?

I find that the shorty handles like a pistol - handy when hunting in heavy brush.

THe sling and cartridge duff came from Kirkpatrick Leather. I've bought a bunch of stuff from them over the last 7/8 years and it's always good stuff.

In these parts, a used but not abused 16" Marlin 1894 in any pistol caliber is a $600 gun.

Might as well face it, you're addicted to guns . . .

Welcome to the fire! I agree with the others, mainly:

(1) The .44 Magnum can be a fine short-range hunting gun, especially in bush hunting;
(2) That $450 is a fair price;
(3) That you're going to love it!

Post some pictures and a range report when you have it!!! :D

I want one. Never had a Marlin, I figure that's going to be my first, a .44 Mag. No ports, no safety. How many rounds in an 18"?

What sort of info do you want ?

Mine handles even better than my Marlin, as I've peeped it, ILO the scout-style scoping:
