Re: POLITICS - POWELL WILL BACK OBAMA
Are you gentlemen suggesting that a man of Colin Powell's caliber would assign his vote based on some quality other than his own good judgement?

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

Re: POLITICS - POWELL WILL BACK OBAMA
Remember, didn't Biden endorse McCain to run with Gore or somebody, and didn't the dems consider Romney for VP?

I would expect much better of Powell. I do not believe that rumour.

Re: POLITICS - POWELL WILL BACK OBAMA
Wishful thinking on Obama's part.
Powell is first and foremost a military man. I doubt he'd like Obama's inexperience over McCain's service.

Re: POLITICS - POWELL WILL BACK OBAMA
Yep. We'll hear that one proven when Obama admits that he is not a US citizen. In other words, hold your breath.

I belive a lot of people (or sheeple) vote by charisma, looks, and retoric. Unfortunately not by charactor, morals or checking their records to see what camp they are comeing and how they are apt to handel upcomeing issues. Its not much different then when we were kids. Most of us looked for someone we considered hot & cool, not the qualitys that our mother wanted us to look for!

Re: POLITICS - POWELL WILL BACK OBAMA
There isn't a lot of difference between the liberal Powell and the very liberal Obama. Contrary to popular belief, the military is littered with liberals - remember the young lady, ah, who was it, ah, oh yeah, Wesley Clark. It is no suprise that Powell will back Obama.

Re: POLITICS - POWELL WILL BACK OBAMA
Ok, I'm gonna mention something......No need to be making racial stereotypical comments. I woked under Powell's watch and he was an honest and honorable man. Powell honestly feels that he would have never got his foot in the door of the upper ranks of the Army if it were not for Set Asides. In this case, affirmative action picked a very good man for the Job(s)....... I saw alot of Minorities and Women promoted into slots that they DID NOT deserve, but that is not their fault, it is the liberal power brokers........ If Powell supports Obama, I, for one, will be dissappointed, but I would not drag it into the racial dirt

That was my impression of the man as well. Like Blaine, I would be very disappointed in him if he backed Obama. Like I said before, I don't believe the rumor; it doesn't fit with the Powell I think I know.BlaineG wrote: I worked under Powell's watch and he was an honest and honorable man. .....

Agreed - if Powell supports him it will be on principle not race. We may not agree with the decision, but I for one won't insult the man.BlaineG wrote: If Powell supports Obama, I, for one, will be dissappointed, but I would not drag it into the racial dirt

Re: POLITICS - POWELL WILL BACK OBAMA
"Colin Powell might endorse Obama
By MIKE ALLEN | 10/17/08 10:07 AM EDT Text Size:
"Retired Gen. Colin Powell, once considered a potential running mate for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), now may endorse his opponent, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), according to Republican sources. But an air of mystery surrounds Powell's planned live appearance Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," and no one is sure what he will say.
"Powell’s unassailable national security credentials could sway voters who are vacillating about whether Obama is ready to be commander in chief, and his endorsement of the Illinois senator would make a national security emphasis by McCain in the election's closing days extremely difficult.
"Powell, 71, a professional soldier for 35 years, has advised the last three Republican presidents.
"The general’s camp is being coy about what he might or might not say on Sunday. But some McCain advisers suspect, without being sure, that Powell will endorse Obama.
“ 'It’s going to make a lot of news, and certainly be personally embarrassing for McCain,' a McCain official said. 'It comes at a time when we need momentum, and it would create momentum against us.'
"Powell, a four-star Army general, was national security adviser to President Ronald Reagan; chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the 1991 Persian Gulf war, when George H.W. Bush was president; and President George W. Bush’s first secretary of State,
"Powell has consulted with both Obama and McCain, and the general’s camp has indicated in the past that he would not endorse.
On “Meet the Press” in June 2007, Powell said: 'I’ve met with Sen. Obama twice. I’ve been around this town a long time, and I know everybody who is running for office, and I make myself available to talk about foreign policy matters and military matters with whoever wishes to chat with me.'
"Asked by moderator Tim Russert if he would come back into government, Powell said: 'I would not rule it out. I’m not at all interested in political life, if you mean elected political life. That is unchanged. But I always keep my, my eyes open and my ears open to requests for service.'
Asked about an endorsement, he said: 'It’s too early.'
NBC’s ‘Andrea Mitchell broke the news of Powell’s surprise “Meet the Press” appearance on the “Today” show Friday.
“In what promises to be a dramatic moment Sunday, Colin Powell — a lion of the Republican establishment, whom McCain and Obama both have courted for months — will finally speak out on a variety of issues, appearing exclusively on ‘Meet the Press,’” Mitchell said. “Of course, years ago, he was talked about as the possible first … African-American nominee of a major party.”

Maybe he'll offer to be the Republican candidate if only they'll dump McCain.

Shouldn't really be a surprise. Powell has been letting his more liberal views come out ever since he left the cabinet.
He said that "I would have difficulty with two more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court, but that's what we'd be looking at in a McCain administration."

I'd guess Secretary Powell just doesn't see the humor in being used by Bush as a sock-puppet to start a war.
The Republican party has betrayed it's conservative base. The GOP, it's officers, and it's cronies have used, and damaged the nation.
Powell seems like a man who might recognize when it's time to take a brush to the bowl.

Powell hasn't been a Republican for years. Yes, he's still a party member, but he's been a Liberal since before he left the White House. This endorsement doesn't surprise me one bit. Nor do I think it will make a difference.
He is NOT as well respected by the troops (past or present) as the MSM would have everyone believe.

I knew a guy that served with Powell in Korea. He said one thing you could always count on was that Colin was going to do what was best for Colin.
