OT-Ever have one of those really bad ideas?

I get the Stupid award for this month !!

So there I was.

Finally got done with a wood working project for the Boss Lady when
I was taking apart that nifty Marlin .35 Rem. I bought yesterday and I had this
"brilliant idea"!

Was thinking about that stack of plywood and oak and looking at my little
NAA .22 and the partial box of .22 shorts in front of me and thought,
" No one's home. I wonder it those .22 shorts would go throught that oak"

Well it won't

Bang! Ouch!!!! What the......

Danged slug bounced off the 1x6 oak and hit me in the knuckle!!!
........ That hurt!! Swelled up 'bout twice the size.

I think I'm ready for the Special Olympics now

Can't believe how stupid that was!!!!
All I can think of is that line from " A Christmas Story"
"You'll shoot your eye out kid!"

How dumb can you get?

Low velocity + solid = Bounce... that's why my indoor backstop is a bunch of hanging carpet samples.

OTOH that's prolly the best gun/ammo combo for busting urban bunnies on the QT... so practice up.

Thats a common move at my digs. I do have a chunk of walnut (about 12"x8"x8") that I use on a regular basis for testing light guns in my gunroom. A real light .32 or 38 usually buries itself about even with the base. .22's are nortorious for bouncing back. I always hear, "what are you doing down there????" Hey, whats the use of life if you can't live reckless once in a while. -------Sixgun

Got a good knot on my shin when a 44 cal ball (from about 15 or 20 yds.) outta my 58 New Army bounced back from a broken Luisville Slugger I tried a penetration test on... ball hits bat.. ball comes back! Duh! ... though it did penetrate it about an inch first...

I had a similar experience, about 45 years ago, when a friend (now gone) and I were just starting out "hunting".

We had .22's, were bored, and saw an old clawfoot bathtub, standing upright, across a field from us - with the "top" facing us about 50 yards away.

We thought it would be "neat", to see if one of us could hit the drain - plainly blacker than the rest of the tub.

My friend shot first, and we both promptly heard the bullet whistle past our heads almost immediately !
We stopped right there, and went home to change our shorts.

I figger, he missed enough to skim the side of the tub with the bullet, going in, and the tub's curvature took care of the return mail.

The old standby double douglas fir telescoping bank shot...seen it and heard it.

PRB do that out of my 50 flinter, I shot a doe behind us and the ball went through the doe, hit a branch followed the branch and KerWhanged off the Y in the branch whinning out over the head of buddy of mine 50 yards away 90 degrees away from the line of fire, this is equal to throwing a penny out of your driver side truck window and having it shatter the windshield on the bounce....hard ball and hard object means ever'body duck!

+1, but Sixgun; I loved your answer! Let's put it this way, I'd rather be lucky than skilled... I won't tell about skateboarding down the Ortega Hwy back in '70! But will say, any dern fool that ignores the physics of a 6% grade w/o the advantage of brakes deserves what ensues.

A kid I went to school with had to pry a shotgun primer out of his forehead. The story went that he'd
placed a shotgun shell on a stump and shot it with a BB gun.

When I was 11 my buddy bought one of those Sheridan Pellet Rifles...he asked one day if I wanted to shoot it, so I promptly sighted it at a young hickory tree and squeezed off...I felt the pellet rip through my hair. (It was the 70's and I had a lot back then ) Decided I'd pick my targets more carefully after that...

I once saw a video of an old boy shooting a Barrett .50 BMG at a steel target. IIRC he was using the 668 gr. FMJ practice load, and his target was 100 yards distant.

The video went, "Boom!!" "Clang," "WHIZZZZ" !@$%@@##%!@%@#%! as the shooter fell off his seat clutching the side of his head. The bullet had bounced back 100 yards and smashed one side of the guys hearing protection. Other than some minor scratches from flying plastic ear muff particles, the guy was uninjured, but they started packing up their gear to leave before they turned the video camera off.

A friend of mine knocked himself out cold as a wedge. He had a 4" bbl S&W .38 special revolver and shot a pine tree with a wadcutter. The slug bounced back and cracked him right in the forehead. Scary, but he has a hard head and was OK after a few minutes.
