What would you do? Model 88 or 94 Commemorative
I stopped by the local candy store and was greeted by an unusual sight for here. There was a 1960 vintage Model 88 for $500 and a Buffalo Bill SRC Winnie 94 for $400. Both are in really good condition. The metal is almost perfect on both, but they have been used as indicated by the minor bumps and dings on the stocks. Which one would you get?

I would prolly go for the 88. You don't see them as often, and I don't get to excited about commemoratives anyway.

At that price, the 88 and then I'd be checking the sofa for spare change for the 94....

Re: What would you do? Model 88 or 94 Commemorative
Model 88 for sure. While the Buffalo Bill is functional, it's a gussied-up commemorative that is but one of zillions of other 94's made during that era which commemorated everything under the sun. The Buff may shoot well--those octagon barrels of that era were very good--but like with all 94's there's a pre-64 and a post-64 difference in overall quality--and the cosmetic frills of the "commemoratives" didn't overcome that. With the 88 you have a rifle that, except for the cheapened checkering of the later ones, were not affected by the engineering assassinations that befell the other Winchester products in 1964. In short, the old ones were just as good as the new ones until they were discontinued. Get the 88. There's plenty of other 94's around that will come your way.

The M-88 is cheap, while the Buffalo Bill's price is average.
I would talk to the shop owner, not a clerk, and tell him I want to buy both, for $700 OTD - then shut my trap until he says something.
BTW - What caliber is the M-88, .308 ?

We, I - Me - and Myself, would go for the 94. I've never like the looks of the Mdl 88. And if I want a bolt gun cartridge I'll buy it in a bolt gun.

I would go for the 88. Like the others have said, you don't see as many and that sounds like a good price.

I'd go for the 88. Then put the 94 in Layaway!!!

Ahem....
If I wanted a bolt rifle, the big W 88 is what I would want; I read a lot of good things about them. Otherwise, Real Levers have exposed hammers and are tube fed.
See how open minded I am?

I have a lot of really good rifles but his one is next to the top of the list -

It's a great shooter - only thing close to any drawback being it takes a little longer to shoot the same amount of ammo because there's often other shooters at the range who stop to admire it - and I hate showing it off -

Re: What would you do? Model 88 or 94 Commemorative
I think $400 for a BB 94 is great! I'd snag that one myself.
It may be blasphemous to say but I'm not a fan of the 88's... they just don't feel right in my hands. I don't like the stocks.
Yes, I know they're great shootin rifles, but I don't care for em... can't tell you how many I've passed on while perusing the used gun racks - just last week in Baton Rouge, I was at Cabelas and saw one- of course it was a lot more than $500!
The 94 on the other hand feels like it grew out of me. I feel the same way about the 92's, 95's, Marlin 94's, 336's, 95's.
Buy the one that you like the most if you need to choose. Simple as that.
