OT- Moose in NY

Post by 336A »

Yup beleive it or not contrary to what a lot of folks think we do have Moose here in NY. However there are no great numbers yet. Hopefully they will do well to where we may be lucky enough to have a Moose season in the future, that sure would be great. There is nothing I would like more than getting a Moose with my trusty Marlin .30/30, as well as seeing a healthy and prosperous Moose population here to boot.

There were Alces americana (moose) sightings in the Hudson Valley a few years ago!

My son saw one go up the road and across the neighbor's yard just
the other day. ('Course, we are in Maine!) I get a kick out of 'em.
They are SO ugly, they're cute = especially the little ones.

We get one or two every year (fifty miles NW of Albany), mostly young bulls wandering in search of a mate. My wife and son saw a bull moose ambling along in a walmart parking lot a few years ago. As the crowd grew, it got itself "penned in" in a backyard on the edge of town. After some discussion, the game wardens decided not to dart it. Instead they ran the people off, gave it room to calm down and figure out what to do next, and the moose made it's way out of town and on into a pretty big wilderness area without further incident.

There's been Caribou too up on the Vermont border and towards the Canadian border! If they would just stick around long enough to populate ...

Don't laugh but Massachusetts is estimated to have a population of moose of up to 700 animals. Due to the death of a woman on the Mass Pike a few years ago there has been talk of a limited season.

Last year while deer hunting in the Adirondacks my buddy and his son saw a bull moose and a cow. We were just North of Nobleboro. I have seen sign almost every year but this is the first time that anyone in my group actually saw one in the flesh....awesome!

That's good - VP Palin won't need to travel all the way back to Alaska from DC now for her annual moose hunt! :D

I grew up in upstate NY and we never had Moose back then. They did originally but apparently they must have either been hunted out or migrated. When I was back there last year up in the Adirondacks, there was a lot of Moose stuff and moose talk so I asked someone about it. They said the Moose had been coming back and that the population is growing. I think that is fantastic. I love the ADKS and now that it has moose even better.

They haven't made it to the part of the park where our camp is ( sw ) yet , but I'm thinking it shouldn't be much longer 8)

At the Northville DEC they were watching 16 different ones during last winter. Saw several on way to range at Fish House . Only one this summer but they are here.

I hope they are around our camp , I'd love to see one up there 8)
Even moreso love to see the pop get high enough for a season on them , but that's not likely in my lifetime.

Glad to hear you fellers back East have some moose, good deal!!

Blasted wolves have just about decimated them here in Wyoming.

A couple of years ago, a young female moose spent a few days with my cousins heifers in Bainbridge. She was kinda hard on fences. Two years ago while hunting north of Cranberry Lake, there was quite a few moose tracks near my friends camp.
