Pistol grip to straight stock conversion

Anyone here converted a pistol grip 336 to straight stock without purchasing anything new,i.e. heating and bending the lever, cutting the stock down and filing the frame? Any pointers or links to someone doing this allready on the web? I picked up a beater today and need something to do after hunting season.

Someone on the Marlin forum did it. He included a few pics too.

I have an extra lever - is a little rusted but only surface - if you're interested. And I'd just see about trading for a straight stock - might get lucky! Though, it shouldn't be too hard to cut the pg off and get a nice stock... that'd just leave the tang...

Most early marlins have the serial number stamped on the lower tang.
That would make it a no-go project for me. Better to find one with a straight grip to begin with.

Man you're talking a whole lot of work, just to save a little money. I'd at least get the straight grip tang and lever, even if you cut the stocks down. Bending that lever straight, and having it look good, plus grinding all that metal off the lower tang and getting it to look normal. Well....I just wouldn't go that route myself.

Marlinman is that something the factory sells? I just read on another forum that Marlin will do the conversion for $300.

I bought my straight grip Marlins for not much difference from what the factory charges for a conversion.

Marlin may sell the parts or do the conversion, but it's best to do as Hobie did; sell the pistol gripped gun, then take the funds and buy a straight gripped Marlin. A second choice would be to watch Ebay and pick up the needed parts a little at a time, and then sell what you take off later.
