Way OT--The Year Is 1964

Post by Sixgun »

Dudes, I just found this picture over at my Dads house. Its very funny how the mind works. It was taken 44 years ago when I was 10 years old and I remember almost every kids name. I can't remember what I had for dinner an hour ago :D

Anyway, Can you guess where little 10 year old "Sixgun" is? At the time this picture was taken, I had already been shooting 4 years.---------Sixgun

I'm the dude with the black shirt one, holding up the school sign. They mixed me in with all the girls. I was even trouble back then. The little Italian girl next to me is my wife's cousin who I had a major crush on. (man, she's got the bucks now--just think of how many more Winchesters I could have had :D ) --------------Sixgun

I've got a picture like that from the mid 70's. Gotta find it now.

I've got one maybe two from way back when. But I have no idea who the names are.

You would have more Winchesters, granted; but you would have more trouble.

Back then the teachers I had were mostly old farmers' wives, and they taught us even in grade school about what this nation was all about; freedom, responsibility, etc. - later on it seemed like they were all replaced with waves of young, wet-behind-the-ears diploma-clutching 'kids' who knew nothing about the real world. It was the beginning of the end of decent education.

I was already done with HS, serving a four-year hitch, and had just gotten a set of orders, sending me on an exotic Southeast Asian vacation.

Look how nicely those kids are dressed. Would kids dress that well today? I hope so but not so sure. 1886.

Sixgun -- you and I are the same age, and my picture of that time could be a twin of yours -- dress and everything.

My theory on the remembering thing is that man's brain is pretty efficient -- it focuses most on those things it needs to survive. Back then, our friends were key to our everyday life, so their names are etched in our memory. Today, what we had to eat yesterday is unimportant, so we don't bother to store it away. Same is true for other items like birthdates. Since social interaction is fundamental to how women operate in the world, and, in my household at least, birthday cards are sent out by my wife, it's unecessary for me to remember such things (of course one could argue that remembering one birthday -- hers -- is fundamental to my existence). At least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! :D

alnitak,

The best way to remember your wifes birthday is to forget it once!!!!

How true!! Fortunately, I figured that out a while ago and haven't forgotten her birthday yet. Now, the same can't be said of friends and other family...but that's why I have her.

"Dudes", "I'm the dude" I can't believe you said that. There's only two times I hear that word, from the younger generation (mainly young punks) or a description of people who ride or enjoy the cowboy life on weekends of vacations. Isn't that word a bit out of your realm? I guess you're calling us "Dudes" and not yourself.

Ole Law Dawg,
I think its an "Eastern Thing" Everybody here calls each other "dude". Its kinda like a chum name, the same as "boss", "buddy", "pal" and in my case "as__ole"! In fact, so many people call me that, I was thinking about having my birth certificate changed to it.! :D :D

One of you wrote that most teachers were farmers wives. I n 1953 we moved to a new village. I started school there in 7th grade. It was also the hefty rough teachers 1st day at that school. She opened with a speech I never will forget! "Alright you people! I am from the farm and can sling a bull around by the tail, and I aint takeing any sxxt from you guys!" Honest, I aint makeing that up!

1964 was the year I saw a red wolf while I was squirrel hunting on the family farm. A sight I'll never forget.
