3rd generation shotgun makes meat.

Post by WCF3030 »

Woke up this morning to my son letting me its time to get ready for some squirrel hunting.
We went up stairs cooked some bacon and slipped them in between some butter milk biscuits, loaded up the car and headed out to some federal land that I like to run the beagle on.
All we were looking for was a few for roasting over the fire for lunch.
Managed to accomplish that in 1/2 hour.
The shotgun has been in my family for over 60 years when my Grandfather had bought it.
Its a full choke Springfield 20ga and has been filling the pot ever sense.
Good times.
Here a pic of my 4 year old hunting Buddie Michael and today's meal.

Do you have a lot of those black phase squirrels up there?

PS You know that boy and especially his grin reminds me of somebody I know when he was that age... Thanks for posting.

Yes we do. 3 kinds black, fox and gray. The blacks are usally just a bit smaller and a little harder to get. All are tasty! :D

Back in the 1950's there was a couple of area in Michigan that had a large populaton of blacks. They were protected then as I recall. Glad ya'll had a good hunt.

Yeah she's a 50 footer, the pic dose seem to do it justice though.
If you look at the pistol grip, it use to be as dark as the lower part of the butt stock.

Down here, the black ones are usually "rock squirrels". They normally nest on the ground or in the root balls of trees rather than up high. They will kill fox squirrel babies but I have also heard that any boar squirrel will kill another male's progeny - similar to male lions. Several years ago, I was hunting along a river bottom one day and heard a terrific racket. By the time I located the tree, a rock squirrel had killed three fox squirrel babies and tossed them out of the tree nest. He bit their throats to cut the windpipe and arteries. The mother (I assume?) was fighting him and fur was flying but he killed them anyway - so I shot him and stopped the chaos. Don't know if any babies were left but I don't think squirrels have big litters.
