Is this Lee cast bullet OK in my model 94?
I've got a Lee mold for a 160 grain .309 bullet. I'd like to use some of these in my model 94, but thought I'd check to see if the nose on this slug is round enough to prevent a chain fire in the magazine tube.
The mold code is C309-160-R
Here's a link to the page on the Lee website that shows the mold:

Thanks!

It doesn't seem to be. I personally wouldn't use it except one in the mag and one in the chamber.

I'm no x spurt but I would think it would take a huge amount of recoil to get a lead roundnose to punch a primer enough to set it off. I'd be game to give it a go, leading would become a major problem before recoil becomes an issue.

Id suggest using the 170 grain flat nosed mould - designed for the levergun.

It has always been a no-no to shoot round or pointed nose in lever guns with tube magazines.

I use that bullet a lot, but I run it through my Lub-a-matic with a semi-wadcutter top punch. It comes out a flat point. (wheel weights)
The mould was a gimmie and it shoots so well, I've never replaced it.

I'll just load up with one in the chamber, one in the magazine tube. I got the mold to make up plinkers for my .308 and .300 Savage, but figured I could make up a few .30/30 loads whilst I was at it.
Re: Is this Lee cast bullet OK in my model 94?
I have the same exact mold that I use for my 30/06 & .308 Win. plinker loads, and I asked the same question 4.5 years ago. The replies I got back then said it was safe, that the Remington factory 30/30 load had a similar nose profile and they don't have a reputation of chain-fire. I wish I could say I loaded up a bunch of 30/30 back then and they have been working great ever since BUT somehow I got distracted and never did get to load any, but I think the Remington round nose comparison still holds true.
For you greenhorns out there the 30/30 is the one in the center.

RN bullets works just fine in tubular magazine 30-30 as they generate enough recoil to be problematic. Lyman 311291 has been a top choice for such use for over 100 years. Now the 45-70 is a different matter altogether!

Round-nose?? You mean like the 170 Gr Remington Core-loct? There's been quite a few "test subjects" that have OK'd that one over the last century or so.Lefty Dude wrote:It has always been a no-no to shoot round or pointed nose in lever guns with tube magazines.

Lyman, the company that ought to know, produced a loading kit back in the '60's.
It was complete for one cartridge. Tong tool & dies, bullet mold, sizer and all the tools for a beginner. This kit in 30-30 included the Loverin 311466 mold which has a profile perhaps sharper than the one that your concerned over. This bullet performed beautifully on targets. Because my intent was to hunt w/the gun, I acquired a flat nose bullet mold. But there was never a problem w/the Loverin. Lyman "said so"!

Look at Hornady's 170 grain round nose bullet designed for the 30-30. Do a Google search on round nose bullets in the 30WCF. Round nose bullets have been used in the 30-30 since it was first produced. That bullet should be just fine.
Really Baby, I swear that it just followed me home.
