Went to the range today (photos)

Post by KirkD »

Well men, while looking at my vacation time this afternoon, it became obvious that I won't be able to cram the vacation time owing me into what is left of the year, especially since I can't afford to take more than a few days off for hunting before Christmas. So I decided I'd make up for it by heading down the road to the range for an hour. Here's a brief report.

32-20: First off, I'm starting to develop an accurate load for my Winchester Model 65 (circa 1941) 32-20 (also known as the 32 W.C.F.). Today I tried 11.1 grains of 5744 under a 90 grain RCBS bullet. These bullets have such a fat olgive that closing the lever the last little bit was a bit stiff, due to the bullet being rammed into the rifling. I'll have to set the bullets in a little deeper or else trim my cases down a bit. Anyway, eight shots at 50 yards indicates that this load is not the greatest. On the other hand, the notch in the open iron sights is terrible for sighting. It is more like a 'U' with sloping shoulders at the top of the U so that it is difficult to know exactly where the U ends. I may exchange the sliding blade for something that has a bit flatter top. Anyway, here's the results, resting my rifle on the top of my shooting bag ....
Image

30-30:
Next up was 'Old Savage', my Winchester 30-30 carbine made in 1954. This is the rifle I'm hoping to harvest a Whitetail Deer with in mid-November, so I've loaded up 168 rounds to practice with between now and then. The load was 28 grains of IMR 3031 under a 150 grain cast GC RCBS bullet for about 2,100 fps. All practicing is done from a free-standing, offhand position. I plan to also try a bit of 200 yard shooting from a sitting position. Shown below are my last three targets, all shot at 100 yards from an offhand position with open iron sights.

Five shots, four on paper: The four out of five shots that did make it on the paper were fairly close together for offhand shooting, but I tend to shoot low when I shoot offhand. If I can't correct that, I'll have to adjust the rear sight. Only two made it into the 'boiler room'. Here's the target ....
Image

Five shots, five on paper: I got them all on the paper this time, but still only two of them would be in the 'Boiler room'. Still shooting low.
Image

Seven shots, seven on paper: I loaded up my last 7 rounds into the magazine and let 'er rip. This time, I managed to shoot a bit higher, but I felt a little sloppy and the holes were all over the map. Still, 5 out of the 7 shots were in the Boiler room, with the last two close together and low. Here's the target ....
Image

Well, my offhand shooting still needs work if I'm going to get them all in the boiler room but, as I said before, I'm just at the front end of my practicing. I got two months to work on this. I find the Winchester model 94 carbine with open sights a real challenge due to its short sight radius. Yet, I love this rifle. It is compact, light, and a joy to shoot. If I can get good with this one, I'll be dadgummed good with my longer octagon barreled rifles.

Always great to see Kirk reports ... especially since he has "too many" classic rifles and a great eye with the camera.

To be a classic a rifle has to be older than you are. :D Ah, but you do bill yourself as an old geezer so maybe it is still technically a classic.

But offhand at 100 is very challenging, I think you are off to a good start. One suggestion, I would circle the 1st shot on each target in RED and as you accumulate targets see where that one goes repeatedly.

Good luck!

With that front bead wandering around, I almost felt like a drunken sailer in gale force winds. One thing I've noticed is that most of the time, within about 1 second of raising the rifle to my shoulder, the bead is bang on. I almost never fire at this point because my brain says it hasn't had enough time to assess the situation yet. I think I may start shooting at the 1 second mark at 50 yards to see where it gets me, as well as a little more careful shooting at 100 yards.

Kirk,

Just for my curiosity how does that 94 carbine shoot that load at 100 yds from the bench? You might have reported on this already, if so I missed it.

Ahh, good ol' human error. Why don't you just take that sandbag into the deer woods with you? Silly canajuns; can't figure out the simplest of problems.:D

Good report and excellent pics.

Joe, earlier this summer and in the late spring, I was experimenting with 30 grains of IMR 3031 and with 29 grains of IMR 3031. The 29 grains gave me tighter groups. I would usually get 4 shots (at 100 yards) into a group that was from 1 & 3/8" to 2" across, but there would usually be a fifth flyer an inch or two away. I thought that if 29 grains tightened things up a bit, then 28 grains might be better. I've only shot one, 5-shot group with 28 grains. It is slightly looser (2 & 1/2") but there's no flyers. I think I'll load up some 30 grains of IMR 3031 and compare them directly with 28 grains, now that I'm getting a little more used to shooting this carbine. I may go back to 30 grains. The best I got with 30 grains previously was 2 & 1/2" at 100 yards (5 shots).

Kirk, you are doing real good with that old 30wcf.I sure am interested in your work with the 32wcf. I am loading a few different loads for my 92 with 5744 and I am liking it more all the time.

A good friend's dad shot a Winnie 30-30 throughout his life and killed deer, elk and a moose with it. His shooting style was to bring the gun to his shoulder and fire immediately. One time in Canada, on the night before his one and only moose hunt, everyone in camp was telling him how he was undergunned with the 30-30. The next day, he stood by while his buddies were shooting at a moose about 150 yards away. They couldn't knock it down and one of the guys noticed that he wasn't shooting, and told him to shoot at it. He cranked off 4 rounds and the bull fell. There were four 30-30 bullets in the neck. After that experience, he agreed that a 30-30 was a little small for moose because he had to hit it so many times in the neck before it fell. He was a guy who only had a 30-30, so that is what he hunted with.

Another story that was passed down occurred in the depression. He and his neighbors pooled all the money thay had and bought 2 rounds to use to get some meat. He shot two big bucks. The first one was dead, the second had to be finished off. How do you suppose he managed that with no ammo? He clubbed the deer with the rifle and broke the hammer off. He never repaired the hammer, and my friend has that gun in a prominant place in his house as a reminder of his father, and how things were.

Good post Kirk.
One of the reasons I like to shoot my leverguns at our regular handgun silhouette matches is that it is great practice for shooting offhand during deer season.

KirkD,
Thank you for the report and pics. Neat! Cartridge boxes from the time period your rifles were made would be a nice touch.

I'm headed to the range the middle of this coming week. Have several different loads / rifles to test

Thanks for sharing, Kirk. I've got so much "vacation time" built up it ain't even funny. I'm not even sure what a vacation looks like... :) You might pick up a decent air gun and work on your offhand shooting. plinking with an air rifle at 20 yards is pretty close to shooting a cartridge gun at 50 in scale. A 22 helps as well, especially if you can find one that weighs as much as your regular rifle. I'm amazed at how much steadier I got at off hand shooting when I started cranking them off with the pellet rifle. I need to get back to getting up to the range more often though, unfortunately it's not an ability that necessarily sticks with you.

I've found the less I think about it and trying to be perfect, the better I shoot my leverguns offhand. Don't hesitate, just do it, and the bullet goes where it should.

Like Kirk, I tend to shoot low when shooting offhand and need to raise my sights.

w30wcf, it would be great to do some offhand shooting with you sometime. I could use some coaching. My brother-in-law has retired form the army this summer and settled into upper New York state, so I'll be heading back and forth quite a bit over the next few years. Maybe one of these times, I can make a side trip over in your direction and we can have a shoot. In the meantime, I can hardly wait to get back to the range this coming week to do some more practicing.

Good report - thanks for posting - and good for you for practicing off-hand. It's a challenge isn't it? When I was fireforming my 30-30 AI brass, I shot almost all of the 100 rounds off-hand at 50 yards. Dead deer every time at that range but 100 is much more challenging.

I'll be practicing at that range once I get my AI hunting load settled.

BTW - I too shoot low off-hand... not sure why but I was debating on sight setting as well....
