.405 Winchester bore diameter in new 1895?
Does anyone have a new manufactured 1895 Winchester in the .405 Win.? I am looking for the bore (groove) diameter for selecting a bullet mold. The Hornady reloading manual lists their jacketed bullets for the .405 at .411". I know I should wait until I have the rifle and slug the bore but I was hoping that someone here has one and already knows the diameter of theirs.
thanks
thanks

Mine measure right at .411.
As far as cast bullets goes the Lyman 412263 is about as good as they come. The mold I have drops the bullets at .414. If you think you need a gas check then the RCBS .416 325 is a pretty good bullet.

Mine measured .4131" (and yes I have the equipment and standdards to measure that accurately; it's what I do for a living). Mine is from the next to the last large shipment that came into the country; the solid frame with the faux CCH. The last shipment were takedowns. I get away with a cast at .4135 but I honed out the sizer die to get a full .414 and that works quite well. It is possible that different shipments are a little different but I doubt it. It is more likely that the first shipment (the returned and modified 270s) would be the odd man out if there were any dimensional differences. The barrels came from an outside source.

I must confess that I have not measured the bore diameter of my Win/Miroku 1895 in .405 Winchester, but I have shot factory Hornady 300 grain softpoints in it and it shoots where I point it. And where Ricky and 86er point it. It also handles beautifully and blows big holes in things. One day, I may shoot it off a bench, but for now, I am just practicing offhand and hunting with it.
THERE! How about that for a scientific approach to breaking in a new gun?
Seriously, I am very interested in the loads that you work up for this rifle, so please post your findings and pictures.

you measurement is pretty much the same as the old original 405'sLeverluver wrote:Mine measured .4131" (and yes I have the equipment and standdards to measure that accurately; it's what I do for a living). I have never measured mine but I get fine results with my 300 grain cast bullet sized a .411 with gas check.

I like that! It must be a "guy" thing to going around blowing big holes in things.crs wrote:It also handles beautifully and blows big holes in things.

I don't think the blows big holes in things is quite accurate, but it sure does hit with authority.
This group was shot with bullet sized at .413

No big holes but there wasn't any doubt about it being a hit.

Thanks for the replies!
The bullet mold I'm looking to get is one made by Veral Smith of LBT. One of his LFN in a 300 grainer should be pretty sweet. Probably will go with a gas check design to clinch it off.
Can't wait for the weather to cool down!
I'll post a pic or two when I finally get the 1895.
