OT- Range day w/ Enfield Sporter and new Sixgun

Post by 2ndovc »

Couple weeks ago "Stan in SC" posted an Enfield sporter for sale and was
finaly able to pick it up this week. Sharp rifle and since I've always had a
soft spot for military sporters and Enfields seemed like a good idea. I have several mil. sporters but no enfields.

Started out as a No4 MkI in 1942.

Best group at 50 yds was with some Greek surplus ammo less than 2". Dirty stuff but always had good results.
Groups opened up a little with the 174 Gr. Hornady JRN over 4895.
Ablolutey hated my cast bullit load w/ 200 gr. RNGCs. My Lithgow will shoot these under an inch at 50 yds.
but this one the groups widened up to 6"+ Have to slug the bore and see what's doin'.
Neat rifle that I'm really pleased with. :D

Next up was my Brazilian CZ 1908/34 7x57 carbine. Neat rifle that I've had for years but haven't fired much.
Just started reloading for the 7mm and kinda took a stab at a starting place.
145 gr.cast GC over 11.5 grains Unique that I got out of one of my reloading books.
Pleasent shooter @ 3" at 50yds.
My other handload was 150 gr JSP and 32 Gr IMR-4198.
This one shows some potential. Right aroud 1-1/2" three shot groups.

The real suprise was this nifty Stoger/Uberti 357Mag. Bisley I picked up last weekend.
Was brought in to a local shop almost new in the box. Had to take it home with me :D

All but one load was point of aim and nice tight groups at 25' off my range bag. The
pistol range is a mess from some logging that's being done on the property. So I had to
stick to the 25' mark.

REALLY happy with this one! :D I know the Bisleys are one of those love 'em or hate 'em
But I've always liked the looks and feel of that grip.

Enfields, in military garb or as sporters, are just neat guns. The only Mausers that float my boat are the 91s...

Yes got to love the Enfield. One of these days I will find a nice No5 with my name on it.

Nice shooting by the way. I suggest giving the Sierra 180gr Pro Hunters a try they shoot nice groups in my No4

My first rifle was an Enfield. I assume yours is a 303 British caliber. You probably already know this, but the standard bullet diameter is .311, not .308 like so many of the 30 Calibers. I don't know if that explains your poor cast bullet performance or not.

That's a nice looking No 4 sporter. I like the look of the five round mags. Pretty range too - :D

I knew there were some Enfield fans out there :D

Thanks kirk.
Yeah,
The cast bullets are .313. Shoots really well in other Enfields especially the Lithgow No.1 and My Savage No4.
I have yet to try it in the Jungle carbine though.
Bullet also shoots well in my 7.62x 54R Finn model 39.

Could just be one of those guns that just doesn't like cast bullits

Carries nice with the five rounder too.
I'm quite taken wit this one. A little more work with the hand loads and I may drag it along to deer camp this year
along with a couple lever guns.

We had a pretty thick fog Sat. morn. It was just burning off when I got there.
I had the place to myself again. I like to get there as early as possible. The property covers 125 acres so
even shooting the big stuff really doesn't bother anyone. Seems like the only time it's ever relly
busy is about three weeks before deer season.

What's there not to like about a Lee Enfield? I guess not all of them came with brass butt plates. She's a beauty. I LOVE my Gibbs 45/70 Sporter (Smelly Nelly), still dreaming of a Wild Cattle hunt on the "Big Island".
