(1) A woman, diffusing some of the uniqueness of Obama's race, appealing to many disaffected Hillary supporters who were already leaning towards "moderate" McCain.
(2) Young - which McCain is obviously not - again taking some of the wind out of Obama's sails.
(3) A solid pro-life and pro-gun conservative - appealing to the base McCain will need to win this fall.
The only other choice I can think of that would have been close would have been Bobby Jindal. I just can't believe the GOP didn't blow it this time!!!
She is Solid 2nd ammendment , hunter son is in the Army. He carries his M-9 in a Simply Rugged holster - She has some RINO tendencies-taxes the heck outa the oil industry. says "we need our fair share" A LOT. signed 2nd biggest spending bill in state history. She is not well regarded by the conservative pundits, in AK, BUT is a far better choice that ANY of the others I have seen on the short list for VP.
Her family attends the same church that we do. Her husband works on the slope and is a champion snow machine racer. Her sister is my dental hygienist

Good for him. Very good. She doesn't have "name recognition" but that will get fixed soon enough.
I hope she's ready for the Dem Attack.

This was a good choice. Sounds like she can stand up to anyone. She sold the state jet on E-Bay! CNBC says she is solid pro-gun lifetime member of the NRA and is a hunter. She'll get my vote.

Well .... Obama wants "change" doesn't he? This upcoming McCain - Palin administration will be a definite change from the Bush - Chaney administration.

Just finished watching her speech on CNN. I missed the introduction from Mccain, though.
Anyway, she seems like she's willing to head in the direction the US needs to be headed.
She definitely is a down to earth, real person and sounds like the type of person we as gun owners would like to have on the ticket.
...and I don't think he even knows it...Walks around with a half-assed grin...If he feels fear, he don't show it. Just rides into hell and back again.
I think McCain his a grand slam with this pick. I was not going to support McCain before, but now I'm leaning real strong to voting for the republican ticket. This woman has her priorities straight and has the courage to act on them. Heck, I'd vote for her for president.

I might have preferred another pick, but that wasn't going to happen; this one caught me a little off guard, but I'm willing to add my support. Like I was going to vote the other ticket anyway! Might have liked the ticket the "other way around", but... hope she'll nip some of McCain's more liberal tendencies.

No I ain't ready, but let's do it anyway!
Bobby Jindal had been my choice until about 2 months ago I saw Sarah Palin on Glenn Beck's TV show. It helped she was 8 years old than Jindal. Right then I knew that she was the best choice for a VP slot and hopefully run for President in 4 years!

"I support adequate funding for a strong public safety presence in Alaska. Feeling safe in our communities is something we cannot accept any compromise on. This includes policing in all its forms, the court system, prosecutors and corrections. If the legislature passed a death penalty law, I would sign it. We have a right to know that someone who rapes and murders a child or kills an innocent person in a drive by shooting will never be able to do that again."

Palin-Jindall might actually make me rethink being an "official" independent...
Ghod, would that be a fun campaign to work for.

I dont ever even open the threads that say OT politics any more here cause I dont want to get into any arguments B U T
I had to do this one
HOME RUN OR GRAND SLAM either one describes this one to a TEE.
Caught me by surprise too but I LIKE it a LOT . From what I have seen so far, heard so far and listened to so far she is a wonderful choice . I was very Blah over the Mc Cain campaign and was problaby going to go with a third party vote , BUT I probably wont now .
The right way is always the hardest. It's like the law of nature , water always takes the path of least resistence...... That's why we get crooked rivers and crooked men . TR Theodore the Great
I remember reading about her months ago, then I forgot her, so this is a very nice surprise. I too was seriously considering voting 3rd party for the first time. Now I feel much better about "staying home" with the Republicans. The prospect of the future of the party just got a lot brighter, but more importantly, I really think she will push "country first". The beltway won't be the same.
Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you. - John Steinbeck
She was my pick from the start; this will really throw a wrench in the O campaign.
She's a woman: She'll get the disenfranchised Hilliary supporters.
Mother of 5: Gets the soccer mom vote
Member of NRA: Gets the gun nut vote
She's conservative: gets the Right wing vote
She's drop dead gorgeous: Gets the pervert and under 25 male votes
She's Pro Life, gets their vote.

Have I left anyone off?
She's pro "Tax the Rich &/or Ebil Big Oil" - so she gets some of the Socialist woman/gunowner Vote too...

It's Alaska's oil. She made sure the that the citizens get their fair share from the companies that extract it. Another plus is she didn't use it to just fatten up government, she made sure that the citizens themselves got checks.
I'm another voter that wasn't going to vote for McCain. She's got me reconsidering and will probably be THE factor that gets me to cast my vote for the republicans.

+1 That would be great. 4 year of McCain followed by 8 years of Palin followed by 8 years of Jindal! That would get me to retirement!!!
I liked Jindal as well, but he wouldn't have brought in some of the women who were going to vote for Hillary; Palin will. Plus the additional years. Both are plenty young enough to be a force in politics for years to come. This is all good.
No, I don't like anyone who wants to tax business more - but in balance, this was an awesome choice!
This is great, someone who seems to STAND for something other than themselves. In Washington no less! Hopefully McCain will use her more than Presidents of the past used their Vice Presidents even if it is only to bounce ideas off of.

I'm guessing this pic is from the "Miners and Trappers Ball" or some similar event. Lots of fun, but I don't think they hold it anymore.....

listening to that gal--McCain won't be able to deal away conservative values without some heat. A women like that ( the way she appears) as the VP will be like a wife having some thing to say about everything

I was having a hard time considering Mccain. Then the talk of Lieberman on the ticket would have been my last straw. Now I won't have to vote against bozo by voting for McCain, I can vote for her. This is a good day.
Being an Aussie living in Aussieland this ain't nothing to do with me, but I am excited about this, don't think Obama is good for America I don't think he has America's best interests at heart, the ole US of A is a bit battered and bruised at present and she needs some tender love and care and he's not the man for the job, how hypocritical is Hillery a couple of months ago she was telling everyone why they should not vote for Obama and vote for her now she is on his side, nobody ever pushed a wheelbarrow that there wasen't something in it for them so whats in it for her.
