30-30 wcf

Post by darrell3030 »

Hi to all
I am a new member, but I have read some post on this site for a few months. I feel like I am in good company.
So, is there anybody else out there that likes shooting/hunting with the 30-30 wcf? I think it the best round there is. My first 30-30 was a Savage 24 30-30/20g over/under. It has taken alot of deer here in Ga. The gun that gets the most use is my Marlin 336cb with peep sights.

I hope to share more post with the site later.

Now is that anything like the 30-30 Winchester - we talk a lot about that here.

Welcome to the fire. Several here speak of the fabled 30WCF, but many doubt its existence. Pull up a stump pour a cup and join in. :D

I have hunted with a 30-30 wcf all life and see no need to go to a bigger gun. Here in Ga. everybody has a bolt action 300 mag seems like. Or you buy a 30-30 wcf for your kid to start hunting with before you buy them a 300 mag. Now I am not downing bolt actions or 300 mags. They are not for me.

darrell3030,

Welcome to the forum. Yeah, we do discuss the 30 WCF (30-30) on occasion. Many occasions actually. And yes I have been know to shoot and hunt with one. Had a few 30 WCFs too.

Tell me more! I have a 30-30/20 ga also. What loads do you use for the 30-30, what sort of game have you taken with the 20ga barrel? Is it a full choke like mine too? Do you use it all anymore?

Well welcome to the board!

I think the 30 WCF is too much for whitetail.

I prefer to use my 94/22 which I've spray painted flat black. If you hold the spot light right next to the barrel it allows you to see your sights quite well!

Just kidding, just kidding...

If you read around here, you will find discussion of using the 30 WCF on elk. So, yeah, we hunt with that caliber :D

This is my oldest daughter and the big muley she toppled with my 30-30 carbine. Despite what modern magazines teach, the moderate speed 170 grain bullet did not bounce off this large bodied buck. One bullet through the chest did the job quickly and efficiently. Shooting distance was about 125 yards or so.

This was a fair chase hunt on un-fenced public land of Black Hills Nat'l Forest, South Dakota.

Welcome to the forum!

I've been known to shoot a little bit with the .30-30. I'll probably take one out to the range this weekend and sight it in (I don't think it's changed since three weeks ago, but you never know) for the deer season.

At last count there were three of them in the gun rack. I'd say it's one of the all-time favorites on this forum, and around PawPaw's house.

Again. Welcome to the forum.

I think Griff holds the record on .30-30`s here at around 30 or so.
I am small spuds compared to him with my 7 or 8 .30wcf`s.

Welcome !! :D

Welcome to the Forum. I haven't taken any deer with my .30-30s in like almost two years. But, then, I haven't hunted deer in almost 2 years! Took one a few years ago at about max range.

Nath, what'd you dose that doe with?

t.r., we can tell from the pic, (being as it's black & white), that buck was taken before the .30-30 fell from grace as a deer cartridge! :P I'm sure that the .30-30 isn't capable of taking more up-to-date bucks!

Chuck, I'm sure someone, somewhere is holding onto more than I. In fact, my brother-in-law is; I have a long way to catch up with him. :D

Welcome to the forum Darrel.

Maybe someone should sneak over to Africa and take the big five all with a .30-30 just so we can say it was done.

Hi 44LVR

I have shot mosty factory ammo in my Savage 24. I reloaded some pointed bullets for it but they were no better. The 20g barrel is a IC, I have always used slugs in it for deer. It shoots dead center but low,so I always had to aim high. When I was a kid I kept so bird shot in my pocket for rabbits and squirrels.

Welcome to the group. Once in a while you'll see someone dis the 30-30 in this forum--usually from those who avidly read gun magazines and believe their blarney. Such comments generally meet with some interesting responses from the rest of the group. The 30-30 is one of the greatest of American calibers. No corner behind the kitchen stove should be without one. :)

Griff, I popped that doe at 60yds, the three of them ran around me to get to the timber line behind me, I watched as my doe ran and noticed her stumble slightly. As she slowed I mounted and was on her again by the time she stopped at 80ish yds. The second round dropped her and was very close to the first, she was dead with the first but that tree line made me give her another.
