I dunno. The Old School, long-skinny scopes don't look too bad... but they still wouldn't have worked for stuff on a TE Winny...

I don't see any leverguns.... ;)

I've often wondered why none of the scope manufacturers haven't come out with a scope that mounts right down on top of the receiver of the Marlin - would be easy to do and would put it down where it should be. That's my biggest beef against scopes on levers - they are so high that they pull your cheek off of the stock to some degree and really increase the canting error.

I have the design in my head right now.... would be a 4x scope with a rectangular housing (not round) that would slide on from the rear and lock in place with cam levers onto a rail that is screwed down. Could make one for angle eject winny's too. And the new Mossy's if they stick.

Ok Pete,
1st off; Marlins REQUIRE a scope! They're just too dern uncomfortable to carry with the receiver in the hand, ya NEEDS a handle. :P

O.S.O.K.,
So now ya know why they have those "suitcase handles"! :D But, I have a mount on my Marlin 375 that sets the Weaver K4-1 so low I had to remove the rear iron, wouldn't clear even folded down!

Was reading Frank Mayer's book "The Buffalo Harvest", he had a 20 power on one of his Sharps...Liked the higher power scopes

Those rifles with the long scope reminds me of the movie (The Outlaw Josey Wells).

I didn't see a "lever gun" in all those pictures. Some of them had drop trigger guards but a true lever gun holds more than one cartridge.Nice try guys.

If the gun's accuracy and intended use merit a scope, I scope it, regardless of action type. If it is a "wall hanger" just for looks, that's different. If I'm going to shoot it, and want to hit anything smaller than say 4-5 minutes of angle, it will have a scope. I've seen lever action guns that will shoot under 1 moa, and bolt actions that won't do 3 moa, so in that case, the bolt gun would get the open sights or peeps, and the lever gun would get the scope, unless I really, really NEEDED to use the lever action on larger, moving targets, or just wanted it to look "authentic."

If I DO use a scope, I don't generally intend to shoot a moving or dangerous target, so I'll put a scope on it that lets me SEE what I'm shooting at. If the gun will shoot from any kind of rest I don't mind 20x or more, but if I need to stand and shoot it I like 12x or less. 5-20x scopes are perfect for me if the gun's accuracy merits them.

Grizz.. Details on the rifle.. accuracy, scope & mounts please..does the rear mount clamp on the dust cover rib or did it have to be D&Td? I'd like something in that realm to make ammo testing easier my 73s.. Nice set up you have there..

Hi, Ben.

The rifle is a 44WCF with a half round, half octagon barrel - full length mag. It is very accurate even without the scope, and with the scope, it is a a tack driver. Nice for old eyes too!

The scope is off-set, so it works fine with the top eject rifles, but does take a bit getting used to. The front mount installs in the rear sight dove tail, and the rear mount slides onto the dust cover rail (dust cover must be removed.) and one hole is tapped into the top of the rail to insure a secure mount. The scope is attached to the mounts with locking screws. The scope can be removed, and the rifle restored to original with no problems.

The scope is a copy of the William Malcolm vintage scope and is available from Leatherwood optics. It is gas filled. Here is their site:

Greetings One & All At MO,

Well, I never knew until I saw Marlinman 93's and Grizzly Adams' levergun photos in this post.

Those old-time scopes, in addition to optically assisting in making good and accurate shooting, are by their nature first-class carrying handles. Probably, but who knows, the scopes are almost as good as a sling.

Take care,

Grizz, I had some of my leverguns' levers wrapped like you show - I found that rust had developed under all of them! I recommend removing that if you don't want the same - unless you've found some way to prevent the rust. I had applied oil to mine but apparently, the sweat from my hands and the tanning chemicals in the leather conspired to overcome the CLP.

Thanks for the heads up OSOK. I have been using those wraps for close to ten years now. So far, no problems with any rust. FWIW, the leather is Native tanned smoked moose hide. That, and our dry climate may make the difference......?

Thanks. Goatguy. My place is located in Magdalena, which is south of Tijeras. The peak in the background is Magdalena Peak, which is famous for "the Lady on the Mountain." Can you see her?
