Ideas for a levergun match?

Post by Slick13 »

Been shooting NRA High Power at my local club, and the idea came to me that we should do something similiar in October or November with leverguns in preperation for deer season. The format I originally had in mind was: NRA SR1 Target at 75 or 100 yards, centerfire only, no restrictions on sights or scopes, 3 to 5 sighter shots before we begin, 10 shots offhand in 10 minutes, 10 shots sitting in 10 minutes, 5 shots rapid offhand in 30 seconds, 5 shots rapid sitting in 40 seconds. When I mentioned it to the club secretary and he thought it was a good idea, but thought we might want to open it to all hunting rifles, and make the format so only a box of 20 rounds would be needed (so no sighters and only 5 shots in 5 minutes in the slow fire portions).

Any have any thoughts, ideas, or advice to offer? I don't know how many of the High Power shooters would be interested, or how many local hunters would be interested (if we're able to get the word out to them).

Thanks,

~Michael

I've always wondered about why people want to try to use leverguns like bench guns and compete on paper.

IMO leverguns are all about snapshooting. See game, raise gun, shoot game. Now.

If/when I can finally get a shoot together I intend to shoot Steel. 6" targets at 100, 10" at 200 timed on a PAST.

Just going with what we got. And what's the difference if the black dot I'm shooting at is on a piece of paper, or steel swinging from a stand? Niether is similiar to a running deer. :)

I figured having the slow fire would give people the chance to practice that one well placed shot in a hunting position (sitting and standing) for that moment when you're walking through the woods (or sitting on the ground taking a break), you look up and there's a deer standing there staring at you. Stay calm, forget about trying to use a tree as a rest, slowly bring your gun to your shoulder, and make a good shot because if you miss it's going to be gone before you can get a second shot off.

I figured the rapid fire would be as close as we could get to a snap shot without a running target.

Because of their ability to make fine adjustments, I would put receiver sights and scopes in a different category than the rifles and shooters using only ramp adjustable rear sights.

For a fun type shoot use paper plates as targets. Three points for hitting the flat part of the plate and one for hitting the curved rim. You can use the 6 or 7 inch plate for slow fire and the 9 inch plate for your rapid fire.
Shoot safely, shoot well, and shoot often.

I've toyed with the idea of a CAS long range levergun event:

10 shots: 2 at 100 yards, 2 at 200, 2 at 300, 2 at 400, and 2 at the steel buffalo at 500.

I'd say it's for the pistol-caliber rifle. That would require either "Kentucky elevation" or quick sight adjustments on the line (like the ladder sight on my 1860 Henry).

I think it'd be really cool!

I like the 20-shot limit - saves money for competitors, keeps it simple and unintimidating for novices.

I would think a couple 'sighter' or confidence rounds would be good - again especially for the novice or the person who has no range access on a regular basis.

I really like SIMPLE matches - simple setup, simple equipment, simple scoring - again, think of the newbie to shooting.

Here's an idea for 15 shots (leaves some rounds for practice or tiebreaking)

- Standing slow fire at gongs (or paper plate 'hit/miss' type targets) - all eight inch disks - 3 each at 50, 100, and 150 yards. Some might go for 'any position' and might be good for newbies and kids not yet big enough to hold out a big gun standing (even the little .357 carbines are 'big' to a young child).

- Rapid snap shots at same targets 3 each at 50 and 100 yards.

For a tiebreaker or bonus challenge you could have a 3 inch circle on each plate/target, and award an extra 'hit' if strike is in that zone. Or you could have a shoot-off of 'any position' at soda cans or eggs at 100 yards.

(Egg shoots are really fun - and biodegradable!)

Well, the next time us Texans get together for a little shooting, I have a large bear & three different size buffalo targets that I'll bring along for something different. @ ranges out to 300 yards if someone has the space, they're very challenging. (Lead projectiles only).

Put 50m chickens at 200m. 20 shots, iron sights (receiver/tang peep ok). Remember Mel Gibson, in the Patriot, "aim small....shoot small".
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
