Restoration of 1892...help

Post by Glen H »

New guy here, I’ve been a member for a while but this is my first post.

My father has given me 2, 1892 rifles, both have seen better days. One has a cut barrel and magazine tube, the other has been poorly reblued.

I’m looking for someone to restore both these guns. I contacted Turnbulls, nearly had a heart attack when I was given a quote.

In the leversmiths button there is a link to Hunter Restorations; has anyone used him, his work seems fairly decent as well as his prices. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated; these guns have been butchered enough.

Thanks

Glen

Well... good restorations by good 'smiths cost good money.

Do you want a "restoration" or do you want them to be "shooters"?

I know of a gentleman by the name of Nick Tooth at Elephant & Castle in Ozark , Missouri that could certainly do a great job on your rifles for you. Don't know what his workload is, but have seen some doubles he has restored that exhibit excellent craftsmanship.
Good luck

Depends on what you really want. What calibers are they in and hows the bores? I once had a 92 shot out bore and it looked It sat under a chicken coop for 50 years! I wanted a .357 mag. I had it rebored, bought new wood, a buddy that knew what he was doing really took his time free gratis, and painstakenly polished it. A friend gunsmith reblued it and put it together. It looked new! It is one of the guns that I hate myself for selling! I probley didnt have $250 in the project, however it was 35 years ago.
