1942 Win 94 at the Range

Post by Cosmoline »

Many thanks to the forum for the help in ID'ing this '94. I finally took it out to the range today. Shot some X-bullet handloads, some cast 170 handloads, and some Nosler partition factory rounds. The handloads were nothing special and both scattered by 75. I've been using 3031 and I may switch to something else. But the heavy Noslers were excellent, and gave me a solid group at 75 even with tired eyes. I need to do a few sight adjustments and they'll be hitting dead center.

The action was fully functional but a bit stiff. It has some old dusty oil in it that I need to clean out. Plus I got the feeling nobody had ever fired this thing much, if at all. I'm actually having to break in a rifle from the 1940's.

The irons are excellent. The rear sight was very well made and while I usually don't like semi buckhorns or beads this one works very well in combination with the front sight hood. All in all a very classy setup. I took her by bike to the range with my big .54's in tow. Pretty good workout.

I'd say it's a keeper worthy of more attention.

Good job!

Could you post a close-up of the rear sight?

Here's a shot of the rear sight. It's a semi-buckhorn.

That's a nice one! I just picked up a pre-war carbine like yours and can't wait to go shoot it.

I bought this one new in about 1955 when I was 14. $65 I think. I put on the williams foolproof and pad for length. It has accounted for 4 to 6 deer. The longest shot I ever made was about 220 yards on a buck with it.

When shooting cast bullets, you may have to clean the bore of copper fouling - completely first to get it to shoot. Just an FYI.

Nice rifle!

Say, is there a no-drill tang or receiver sight I can put on this thing? The tang seems to be set up for one, but I see no pre-drilled holes in the receiver. I did a search around but came up empty.

You'd have to d&t the receiver for a receiver sight, but Lyman and Marble's make tang sights that will fit the existing holes in the tang.

Nice rifle!
I was going to suggest the same. Lead bullets & copper fouling in the bore do not mix. And accuracy is out the door.

You might consider a Lyman or Marbles tang sight. Also there is a ladder sight that fits in the rear barrel sight dove tail.
