My New marlin W/Pic

Picked up my Marlin XLR 30-30 I put on Layaway last month. The action is much smoother than I thought it would be. I fired it 2 times at a Gatorade bottle from about 30 yards, and hit it. The open sight is pretty close. I plan on putting an XS Sight rail system on it with their zero peep. I just cannot decide if I want a conventional scope or a Scout scope on top of it. I will give it a couple weeks and then decide. I am leaning toward a conventional Leupold 1.75x6 as I have no experience with the scout scope. I know some of you guys swear by them though.

Photos can't really show what the eye sees in sighting position, but this setup has worked well for me; the scope is always there, and I find I use it nearly all the time, especially in low light or for a precise shot. In the event it's raining and I have the lens caps on, or I just want to use the open sights, they're there and ready. If you like to remove your scope this setup wouldn't do. In the photo, the lens caps are on, and add to the clutter, and I have a laser mounted on the scope tube which makes it even more cluttered.

(Funny, the last deer I shot through the heart by putting a round between 3 or 4 inches of gap between saplings thanks to the scope and laser combo didn't comment about the 'poor field of view' I had. )

Fortunately, I was able to keep an 1894 .44 setup WITH a scope and the backup peeps, and another 1894 I keep without a scope and using a Williams FP receiver sight. If I just had one setup, though, it would be like this.

I love the 30-30. But you know what? It doesn't matter what cartridge/rifle you choose as long as you use.
