Gunsmith?

Post by timkelley »

Does anybody know of a gunsmith worthy of the name in W. Idaho. I have 94AE Trapper in .357 that needs work. I believe it has a broken ejector and possibly other problems.

Tim,

The 94 is a pretty basic tool, and if you have a modicum of mechanical aptitude, a couple of hollow-ground slotted screwdrivers, and something to use as a punch, it's a piece of cake to get to the ejector. The whole tang assembly comes out with two screws, the lever and lever link drop out with two screws and two pins and then viola! the bolt slides right out.

Look here for instructions: http://www.castbullet.com/misc/tdown.htm

Pull the bolt and look at the ejector on the underside. Chances are, the spring is the issue. It may have been caused by the cartridge block, which is NS=Not Shown in the diagram, but is listed in the parts list after part #10. It is part # U346410100 CARTRIDGE BLOCK,357 MAGNUM. It's a little spring thingy that screws to the end of the lever and is probably there for 38 Specials, as mine has been broken off for years and 357s and longer are all I shoot out of it and I've seen no ill effects from it's absence. It resides right next to the ejector spring and I can see where it might bind the spring.

Winchester is really fast on getting parts to you, and there's a couple unique to the 357 you might consider getting anyway.

Holler back if you need help.
Kind regards,
Tycer

Tycer, thanks once again for the parts listing and now for the castbullet.com article. I should have said that I have bits which fell out the bottom of the rifle and if I could put them back together I believe they would be the ejector. I will try to get time this weekend to have the rifle into pieces and then I'll know.

Tycer, I am sure I need to order .357 ejector and spring. You seem to know about the Model 94, would you care to offer an opinion regarding a "spares package" for this rifle.
I cannot have fired more than a couple thousand rounds (mostly 38sp) thru this one, and while I like it, I wonder about how it will last.

Tycer, finally had my 94 apart today and the information you gave me was pure gold. It came apart/went together very nicely (only problem was when I dropped the trigger group and I guess I can't blame that on you). I just want to issue a public THANX to you.

Well Mr. Tycer, I'm back again. I put the new parts in my Trapper today and took it out to shoot. Fired about 100 38sp lead and all was good, I then fired 18 357mag and it broke again. The ejector itself broke in two at the juncture (sp?) of the spring shaft and body and the spring crushed lengthwise (hope this makes sense). Ideas?
There is supposed to be a Winchester Service Center near Boise, I guess I can take it to a real gunsmith. I was pretty proud of me too.

Tycer, since you seem to be the (or one of the) expert on Win 94s, I think I need to tell you. I finally found out the cause of the broken ejectors in my 94. The short story is the .357 AE ejector rides against the side of the left cartridge guide as it cycles to the rear and then front. My ejector was catching the rear of that guide and being forced out of it's slot in the bolt, it had to break. A small bevel on the rear of the left guide and general smoothing of the ejector makes the problem go away.

Thanks again for your trouble.

Kelley,

Thanks for coming back and telling us what the problem was. I'm one the guys here who talk about the 94s a lot, but I usually don't say much on the newer .357s because I have no experience with them.

Now I've learned some good points.

Thanks

Joe
