Rossi 44 Mag carbine

Gentlemen I`m new to this forum & I need a little advice. I found a Rossi 44 Mag SR carbine. Good bluing, clean hard wood stock. It has an engraved reciever which Im guessing is press engraving. I believe its an early model as it was imported by Interarms. I dont need this rifle but thats never stopped me before. It wont be worked hard. I mainly want it as a big bore blaster since Im already set up to relaod 44 Mag. Are these decent rifles? Price is $299. Is that reasonable for this model?

Oooo... better ask Nate (Steve Young) on this one.

For about anything but the .44 I'd say "If the Bore's good, it shoud already be in your safe".

But IIRC there was a batch of Rossi .44s that had some throat/bore issues that I can't remember the details of.

Thanks for the link! I have 2 other leverguns but theyre both 22s so I dont know much about the Rossi`s and I wasnt sure where to go for info.

Some of the Rossi 44's had oversize bores. Usually not a problem with jacketed bullets, but if you wanted to shoot cast bullets it could be an issue. One that can be dealt with, but you won't shoot normal off the shelf .430" cast bullets with much success.

If it's in decent shape, that's a good price.

IF you need them, MtBaldy will send you up to .433" Keith SWCs. I needed them for my S&W 629-1's throats. Of course, you won't be able to feed them thru your tube mag unless you seat them deep enough, which will mean compensating for the extra pressure. jd45

I believe the Rossis with the engraved receiver are some of the older ones. Or maybe not. At any rate, Steve's Guns is the one to discuss these with.

As for the Keith SWCS jd45 mentioned, it's a piece of cake to have a Rossi "adjusted" to feed them. I had one in .45 Colt worked over and after that it would feed any shape bullet as long as it wasn't longer than the big Keith bullets.

Welcome aboard!

The Rossi "Winchester 1892" clones are by and large very good guns. Any pre bolt-safety model in good condition is well worth $299. You already reload for the .44 so you know how much fun the round can be. Steve Young, a.k.a. "Nate Kiowa Jones", is our resident expert on these guns. He may be slow in responding though due to some issues we are all praying for him on.

I believe its a very early gun. Theres no safety & the serial is 0002XX.

Howdy and welcome.
If you can get it for anything less the $400-$450 you won't get hurt. Up until dec. some of the new production guns had oversize bores but the older Interarms guns had pretty decent bores of the correct size.

BTW, don't worry bout hurting it with stout loads. Any of the Ruger or TC loads are more than safe in a 92 action.

The stock looks like the top one, the engraving looks like the bottom one. Also the bluing is more of a matte blue, not glossy. Im going to go back in the AM to wrap up the deal. Thanks for all the input from the pro`s, Dave.
