range report: a perfect day !!!

Post by new pig hunter »

one of those perfect days at the range !!

put a small watermelon on the 100-yard line. Broke out the Marlin lever action in .375 Winchester caliber. One shot, one huge sploosh !!
put a bowling pin on the 100-yard line and moved it all around with the Marlin.

put a small watermelon on the 200-yard berm. Broke out the Remington 700 ADL in .22-250 caliber. One shot, one sploosh !!
put a small honeydew melon on the 200-yard berm, another one shot .22-250 sploosh !!
put a bowling pin on the 200-yard berm, moved it around with the .22-250 and the Marlin.

What a day !!!

Cheers,

Carl

the local 99cent store now carries produce .... including small watermelons and honeydew melons for 99cents !! Fun, inexpensive, and very interactive targets !!

oh, and I also had a head of cabbage .... took 2 shots with the Marlin to sploosh it. Cabbage is tight-pack (compared to lettuce) and really explodes. Last month I put a fresh head of cabbage at 100 yards and hit it with the .22-250. It literally vaporized. No real pieces or parts out on the range line. Nothing. You'd a-thought a canister of tannerite had been inside.

OH, and of equal importance re. the .375 Winchester ammo I use: I am now a sold and solid believer in the Hornady 220-gr bullet. Great Accuracy !! I was hitting where I was aiming !! Every time !!
I had my target board at 50 yards and the tight grouping was mind boggling. I know I've whined plenty in the past about no groups, wandering groups, no consistency of anything .... well, that seems to now be a nightmare in the past.
I don't reload. I buy from Wisconsin Cartridge, and the owner of Ten-X Ammo is kind enough to reload for me.
Today, the first 2 boxes of ammo were from Wisconsin Cartridge (unknown brand & amount of powder). The next 3 boxes were from Ten-X (36 gr of RL-7). 100 shots today, and every one of 'em made me happy. No ringers, no zingers, no fliers, multiple instances of touching, tons of consistency.
I didn't measure anything, but shooting at a 3" diameter Shoot-N-See target at 50 yards, I'd put 5 shots in the upper left quadrant, no problem. The tight grouping was amazing.
So there's even more reasons why today was such a perfect day at the range.

Cheers,

Carl

That sounds like fun.
The local range here used to let us shoot melons, oranges, coconuts, golf balls, tennis balls, pretty much anything we wanted. I could never hit those golf balls and only occasionally the tennis balls, but those coconuts better watch out. Now it is only paper. not quite as fun, but the price is right.
