Rossi troubleshooting help needed

Post by kooz »

I removed the spring and follower from my Rossi m-65 lever, and now it seems to hesitate when I am levering the gun, like it is hanging up on something ever since I put it back together. I thought I put it back in the same way it came out, but maybe not ? Is the spring made to only go in one way ? Thanks

If you're talking about the mag spring and follower, then... well... yes. One end is tapered to fit inside the follower, at least it is on my mdl '92s, basically the same gun. It shouldn't have anything to do with levering the gun, however. If you created a burr, dent or ??? inside the tube, it might exhibit a sticky spot, if I understand your description correctly.

Thanks, I'll give it a close inspection after I pull it down again.

Gents,

The couple of Rossi leverguns that I have had opened up actually have a straight spring, with no taper. It appears that these examples use springs from a "roll" of stock that is just cut to the length that each assembler determines to be correct for the magazine tube of the gun he is working on. The ends of these springs are not finished the way you would expect them to be.

kooz, just be certain that your follower was not put in backwards.

The stock plastic follower tends to hang up, a metal one that would cure the ill can be had from Steve @ Steve's Guns.

+1 on taking the follower and spring out and cleaning everything, including the interior of the mag tube. On my Rossi's, one--the carbine--has the ends of the spring coiled around itself so there isn't a 'tail' end of the spring sticking out. On the rifle, the ends of the spring are just 'there', like one of the above posters said, as though someone just took an infinitely long chunk of spring and trimmed off an appropriate length.

If your spring is like the latter, with raw ends, make sure that that end is fitted inside the follower and not just pushing against the lip of the front of the follower, be it steel or plastic. Since the plastic follower is much thicker then the steel one, it may be more likely to happen with this type. If the 'tail' is sticking out or caught against the edge of the follower it might be rubbing against the inside of the mag tube causing the friction of which you speak.
