There was a topic very similar to this one a little while ago. I forgot what they said about it but I am sure someone will be able to help you out or at least attach the old thread in a message for you.

I don't know of a commercial product that will successfully re-blue the scintered steel receivers of the post -64 Winchesters of that era. I've used a cold blue for touchup purposes, but even those will be particularly noticeable to the keen eye. Depending on the amount coverage you're lookin' to cover, you might consider gettin' 'er done professionally. (And be careful to query the shop that they know bluing salts won't work!
Some think they know everything.)

Basically ,no bluing I know works on those receivers. My next option when i get time will be to try a spray on coating Gun kote, not to confused with dura coat which goes on thicker . My local smith will spray a prepped receiver for $25. Or you can try it yourself Midway sells it in gun metal blue for $16. My gunsmith says once it's on you have to bead blast it to get it off. It's a spray and bake system. Good Luck!

bad news griff. I have already sanded down to bare metal, and I need to keep this one low cost. Work is slow and I'm scared to turn loose of money right now.

Give these guys a call... Classic Guns, Inc., but remember, you need to blue the receiver and barrel separately. I've still got some work to do on my projects, but will be having them color case harden my post '64 projects.

Do an iron plating and then have it blued? Just a thought. Not sure how it would work out with tolerances, but I'm sure the bluing would hold and look good.

Basicly heres what you need to do...
If the receiver is bare metal you need to have it steel plated and then blued. When you took this down did you notice a layer of copper color? this was part of the factory plating. A lot of these were copper plated and then black chromed, like the receiver on my old Canadian. I have not found any cold blue that worked acceptably with these receivers. The older guns turned purple when re blued. I have foound that they parkerize well and I have solved this problem in the past by parkerizing for the folks who could stand a grey gun.

Thanks guy's for the info! I went and bought some birchwood casey bluing paste . I steel wooled the receiver down and put 7 or 8 coats on it and just wiped it down betyween coats with a soft cloth. if you rub it with the steel wool the blue would come off real easy. when I got done I sprayed it down with wd 40 and buffed it with the soft cloth. It didnt come out like a new gun but it made it look like a clean old gun with some wear on the bluing. to help with the rust I rubbed her down with some hopes 9 gun grease. mabye I'll post a picture when I have time. again I dont mined the clean old gun look with a little blue gone around the edges. better than the rusty paint look with pits like when I bought it for $165.00. p.s. you guys are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Re: 1974 winchester 94 reblue help
Brownells has a product called Oxynate 84 that works on most of the Winchester 94's. It is a hot blue method, designed for stainless and cast metal originally. Hope that helps.
Re: 1974 winchester 94 reblue help
hey guys! got my blue to look better. I used a black sharpy through the thin coat of hopes 9 grease that I applied to the light spots on the receiver and smeared it with my finger before it dried. looks better now. I know Im a cheapo but this was a cheap project from the start. besides Im poor.
