Well done on a great rifle. I have never shot factory fodder through any of my Browning leverguns but I can tell you that the Miroku guns tend to have short throats. Some forum member will come along shortly who can advise you. Good luck with a great rifle. 1886.

Well... that's a can of worms! Kinda like askin' a fellar what .22 ammo is best. But... I'll try to answer to the best of my recollection and information.

The 1886 will be length sensitive. I believe that factory 405 grain ammo is going to about as long as you'll be able to cycle thru the action. There may be some heavier bullets loaded that are seated deep enough to cycle, but... I only use handloaded fodder, so I'm not the best to answer.

Other criteria may provide some of the other fellars more details to give you an informed answer: hunting - what type of ranges do you expect, what game would you be after; plinkin' - again, what ranges are you interested in shooting; target - what types of targets, paper/steel, formal or informal competition. All of this information would predicate my selection to a particular ammo type, jacketed, lead, hot/light, plus bullet weights and design.

Oh yea... congrats on yer new rifle, I love mine. And, you knew this was comin':

What is all this short throat business? I had always been led to believe that the reason the modern Browning could be rechambered to things like 50-110 and the Marlin couldn't is that the Browning 86 has a longer chamber than other 45-70s? Maybe I got confused or something.

Yeah. Short to non-existant.

See this thread http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... f=1&t=8270

Factory fodder feeds fine because most of it except the semi-custom stuff is using a fairly conical bullet. Widen the meplat and go WFN and you are asking for trouble unless you load bore-riders.

I got the best results (on both ends of the rifle) from mine, on deer, black bear & me, with factory 300gr slugs.
