What boresighter do you recommend?

Post by glock2240 »

I've put off buying a boresighter for sometime now, but I've come to the conclusion that I need to buy one. Which one would you recommend?

Seriously, get to a range or some place you can see your bullet strikes and go from there. Start at a short distance, 25 yds., and get on to your target. When you're centered there it won't take much to pull yourself in at 100 or further.

I have had really good service from a Sweany Sight-A-Line.
They are a little more expensive than the rest, but I can set up a service rifle to be within 2 minutes of angle with it and it hasn't been wrong in twenty five years.

I have a laser boresight from Brownells:
100-003-193
Deluxe Laser Boresighter Kit
$77
I'm satisfied with it, altho it does work best in other than bright light. The Delux gives a horizontal line that is good for scopes.

I think they're overrated. I sight on an inanimate object on the 100yd berm and fire one shot. Should be able to at least get on paper with one or two shots. I try to get it pretty close to save on those 100yd strolls.

I use a Lite Site 150. We just bore sighted 3 different rifles with scopes and 2 with iron sights. All 5 were within 6 shots of perfect at 100 yards. I'd say it works pretty good.

I picked up a "laserlyte" from Walmart for $34

It will sight in .22 to .50 cal guns. I recently sighted in a Savage 10 FP with a Burris tactical 4.5-14x42mm FFII and was only off 1-click windage and 3 clicks elevation. This bore-sighter has saved me WAY more than the $34 it cost...

Tim,
Here is one on Ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=009

I have used many of the "mechanical" types of these while working at a gun shop in the late 70's, early 80's and none of them held up or worked as well as the Sweany. Don't have too much experience with the laser types, but I would think they are much the same as the collimitors in that they are only as good as the quality of the manufacturing and the trueness of the spud attachment and bore alignment system that they use. Never bothered with the electronic ones because the one I use works very well. While price is not the only indicator of quality, it is usually a good one.
Of course one could just put some rounds into the berm and make a sight adjustment to center the group, or at least get "on", but these tools make it possible to mount a sighting system (glass or iron) on a rifle in the shop and set them up correctly to have it within a couple of minutes at any range. I can also tell if the reciever threads are not in alignment with the bore centerline axis. This has happened a few times with some of the lesser quality M14 clone receivers. Also they are a great aid to set up a scope for getting maximum use of the elevation built into the scope. You can tell at your bench if you are going to run out of elevation adjustment at 500 meters, and adjust the mounts accordingly. In Highpower or Silhouette, the starting ranges are 200 plus yards and it's confusing to just blast at a rock and try to make a correction.
Hope this helps,
Ken

To boresight is very easy and cheap!
Resize a fired case and push it into the chamber, clamp the gun in a padded vise ( I use a B & D workmate) and sight through the flash hole at an object 25 yards away ( use a small mirror on Winchesters and remove the bolt on Marlins) move the scope crosshairs to centre on the same object ( I use a 1" black dot on a piece of paper) and there you are. Shoot at paper at 50 yards and you will be surprised how close you are.
Cheap is good!!

I bore sighted a carbine tonight (both orin sight and optic) without getting up out of my chair. :D

My Site Lite laser has paid for itself many times over (literally).

+1 The empty case is a good idea - thanks. I've always just used the bore itself and centered the dot or object in it - works fine, but the flash hole would be better.

what Kimwcook said. Take one shot at a target at a distance where you're sure to hit the paper, then make sight adjustments, and go from there. No boresighter is going to do much more than put you on the paper with your first shot. Anything better will be pure luck.
