OT Don't go to a Gun Shop when you are skint!

Post by gamekeeper »

I went to the Portsmouth Gun Centre with my girl friend to pick up a new Webley & Scott .410 O/U she had to return because the first one was faulty, when the guy behind the counter say's we have something you might be interested in. :) Being short of cash I hoped it was something I didn't like or was too expensive to even consider. He then brings out a Savage 24 .22/.410 Wooden Stock and looking good. :o I ask how much, expecting it to be about £200 and he say's "you can have it for £100 that's $198, :D so I said the only thing I could, I'll have it! Just got to sort it out with the Police which will probably mean getting rid of one of my other .22s. As I have said before the Police always question why anyone requires more than one gun in the same calibre and I already have three rim-fires.
Photo's when I pick it up.

game keeper that should make a real good fox popper. Do you have a good high powered .22 load like CCI Stingers available over there? Of course you could use a BB gun like Nath.

Yup, we can get Stingers, Winchester Lasers, Remington Yellow Jackets so I reckon my 9422M will have to go. I was going to keep it till I found a 32/20 I could afford.
But since Nath is killing foxes with his air rifle I ain't so bothered about Ft Lbs.

You'll enjoy that gun, they are good. I've taken a few fox with .410. The longest was 33 paces with half an ounce of 7s, I waited till he was side on. I was impressed so opened him up and had a look, he had seven no7shot through the ribs and stop on the opposite ribs.
I have got a 410 MEC junior reloader if ever you want to make an offer on it .
Not trying to tell you what to do but consider trying some 7s or 7&1/2s

Pete44ru,
Yup that's the one, with the selector button on the side. The wood on yours looks a lot better than the one I'm waiting to buy! How does it shoot?

Nath,
When I was Keeperin' for a livin' I carried a S/B .410 when checking the traps and snares in the early morning. Shot a lot of snared Foxes with it at various ranges and never had to shoot one twice. Like you, I also like 7s in a .410 but find them harder to get, a lot of folks still thing because it's a small bore you need bigger shot, which goes against logic!

I had to completely remove the rear sight step elevator, in order to zero the rimfire barrel @ 50yds.

I'm currently diddlin' around, trying to find some ammo it truely likes, as the best groups I'm currently getting with the ammo I have on hand, open sights, and crappy eyesight is about 5-6" @ 50yds.

It seems to center the shot charge to the POI of the iron sights much closer, at about 20yds, though - a neat plus.

Pete44ru,
I was getting groups like that with my Browning ATD, using Remington Sub Sonics, I changed to Eley Sub Sonics and boy did it make difference. :o I've been putting it all down to my crappy eyesight! :D

I think I should say "congrats" John, but when I think of the police making you get rid of one .22 just so you can buy another one, my blood boils!!!

Well you learn something every day! I did not know they did a model with a selector like that! I allways thought they had the hammer selector! Well there you go!
Is it 3"? I don't have a 410 any more but there is some Winchester 3" 6s in the ammo box if you fancy it GK.

I am not sure if you can get this ammunition over there but CCI makes a type of 22 lr called Quik Shok. The bullet is prefragmented into three peices and swaged into a hollow point. It was designed to give better performance to the 22 lr. I have used it on things like woodchucks out of my 16" TC Contender and it seems to bring the wounding capabilities up to a 22 WRM.

The .410 is a bore that you don't see too often in the woods and fields around here. It is a shame since I kind of like it myself.

I have tried that but it dain't work

bigbore, I've never seen any Quik Shok ammo over here but now I know about them I'll be on the look out!

Nath, if ever I'm up your way I would love to swop your 3" shells for a pint or three!

Jay, I know how your blood boils, mine does too, so for the sake of your blood pressure please stay in the USA. :(

Art, I thought it was a good deal, even if I was "Skint"

Pete,
If ever that side button selector gives you trouble, I have heard that the hammer selector fits that model too, you just have to block the hole where the button was after changing the hammers!

I got one years ago and my son now has it. We were shooting clay pidgeons with the 'family' 20 gauge last week, and he decided to whip that 22/410 out. I told him he was crazy, and reminded him he'd have to use HIS ammo (I have a .410 reloading tool but have not yet reloaded any .410).

He hit 4 out of 5...!

I have a new respect for that little gun now. And the kid.

As for having to get rid of one .22 so you can get another, I am thankful that here in the U.S., that's what we have WIVES for... Still, there are alot of taxpaying voters in this country who think the same way.

If you look at the voting demographic here, nearly HALF the voters are so young they don't remember the mishandling of the 'gas crisis' in the 1970's, and even fewer remember 'back when' in the 1950's there were essentially NO gun laws which affected purchase, even via mail order catalog. You get a bunch of voters who don't have any real-world experience to contradict the 'common sense' drivel the media and politicians try to sell them, and Obamanation here we come.

Don't underate the 410 dudes, I have used them many times on driven pheasants, woodcock and pigeon/dove and duck and a goose.
If it's this side of 30yds it'll do it :D

I know I've come late to this party but...

CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is THE 24 to get if you ask me.

I hunted fox with one (with Tenite stock) in my youth (borrowed/loaned depending on how you look at it). Great gun. The other versions (except the wood stock) lack something in the handling department. Either the .410 or .22 LR will handle Messr. Renard.
Sincerely,

Hobie
