Winchester help
I am looking at a Winchester 94 in 30-30 at a local gunshop. The serial # has the date of manufacture in 1972. The receiver has light surface rust all over it, but the bluing looks very bright. Barrel and muzzle looks great. I'm really interested but they want 500.00. That seems high for a used gun to me. Am I off base?
Re: Winchester help
It's priced $250 to $300 too high.angryman wrote:I am looking at a Winchester 94 in 30-30 at a local gunshop. The serial # has the date of manufacture in 1972. Re: Winchester help
yep, agree - the rust is a big detractor in price - offer $300 with plans on spending $150 to refinish the receiver (color case hardening is very attractive!) or pass.

I got a 1928 carbine for 650.00. If you have 500.00 to spend a pre64 is within reach.O.S.O.K. wrote:yep, agree - the rust is a big detractor in price - offer $300 with plans on spending $150 to refinish the receiver (color case hardening is very attractive!) or pass.

Re: Winchester help
That's a $200 gun. When you clean that rust off, 90% of the rest of the finish will go too. That rust runs under the bluing taking out the plating that was on the receiver that holds the blue. Wipe that gun with a steel wool and it will be white.
Pass on that one!
Pass on that one!

Re: Winchester help
Save up a few extra $$s and wait for a NIB one. Remember, they made 5 Million before the went to the AE, and 2 million after that, 5 bills should find you a pristine one. Good things come to those who wait.

Re: Winchester help
I agree with previous posters, you can buy pre-64 guns in that price range, even pre-war for a bit more. At the Antique Winchester Collectors shows in Cody, you can still find commemorative rifles in that price range, and they will be new in the box, and with extra grade finishes in many cases, and as octagon barrel rifles, etc.

Re: Winchester help
Thats' what I thought. They will take off 50.00 if you donate blood every quarter when they host a blood drive, but I felt that was still too high. All guns are overpriced here in Charleston, SC. I see lever guns in pawnshops all the time. Of course, now that I want one, I only find real junk!
Thanks very much,

Re: Winchester help
IIRC the 94's from 1972 have that funky alloy receiver that doesn't blue with normal methods...comes out bright purple. I think they were that way in '72. Someone will correct me if not...if it is one of those, I wouldn't buy it for $150 if it had poor finish.

That's funny. Ruger collectors like the "plum" color. I assume it's another metal.
