The amount of sheer Guts and will to see the beach and know what is coming cannot be measured. God Bless them ALL.
Every summer in Conneaut Ohio they do a reenactment of D Day as they have a huge long beach and bluffs overlooking it. thousands of people attend.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb9yZaBTgRA

There were a bunch of men who made the ultimate sacrifice for others that day.

Sadly so many today do not remember the sacrifice of so many brave men.

I watched Band of Brothers all day Memorial day, which was good, cause I was laid up here sick anyways.
But I always think actually all thru June mostly, remembering D-Day, but especially D-Day in the Pacific which was happening at same time! My dad a 2nd Division Marine landed there, Saipan day 1, and stayed thru the completion! That was our first invasion on actual Japanese soil, and first also where we had to fight both Japanese military and civilians totally! That victory along with few more cloe by islands, gave us the landing strip that made B-29's to fly within range of Japan Mainland!
Bless all those involved, and families, both Europe & Pacific, and Thank God for Them!

Interesting D-Day weather analysis by a widely admired meteorology professor at the University of Washington:

You are correct.

“General Eisenhower, who started it all with his “OK, let’s go” order, gets the last word. In 1964, on D-Day plus twenty years, he was interviewed on Omaha Beach by Walter Cronkite. Looking out at the Channel, Eisenhower said, “You see these people out here swimming and sailing their little pleasure boats and taking advantage of the nice weather and the lovely beach, Walter, and it is almost unreal to look at it today and remember what it was. “But it’s a wonderful thing to remember what those fellows twenty years ago were fighting for and sacrificing for, what they did to preserve our way of life. Not to conquer any territory, not for any ambitions of our own. But to make sure that Hitler could not destroy freedom in the world. “I think it’s just overwhelming. To think of the lives that were given for that principle, paying a terrible price on this beach alone, on that one day, 2,000 casualties. But they did it so that the world could be free. It just shows what free men will do rather than be slaves.”

God bless the soul of President Eisenhower. I was fortunate to see him as a very little boy in Missoula, Montana, about 1955.

Cronkite had a weekend house just down the road, us kids used to fish his pond.

Band of Brothers certainly brought it all to life for the younger generations. I for one will never forget.
That haunting music from BoB really gets to me!

On my one day off, one week in Africa, I stayed in my tent and watched the entire series on my laptop. Lt Winters tactics for the attack on the 88s was taught at IOBS (Infantry Officers Basic Course) when I was there.

One Uncle was in the 41st armored Infantry Division under the 2nd Armored Division. He went ashore on June 9th, 1944. He never forgot the pink tinge of the ocean and things in the water bumping the men as they waded ashore. He didn't tell anyone much. Just enough to make you realize that it was not enjoyable in any way at all. He only once that I heard said that 3 days before was the toughest part of the war for anyone. He finally rotated home after the Battle of The Bulge. From North Africa all the way to the Battle of The Bulge. Without those who put themselves In Harm's Way, our world would be vastly different.
